Mine is peppy compared to my push lawn mower, but it would have a hard time beating a self propelled one.

Actually it's not that bad, just fun to joke about.

Well here is my 81 240D that I have had for 10 years. Daily driver with about 383,000 on her give or take 50,000 or so when the speedometer was broke. She broke down on me a couple of months ago and I was going to swap in a 300D turbo engine, but it turned out not to be as bad as I thought so I put the engine back together and I am still driving her.

I find I like the wheel covers more than the alloys...others?

How about you-all?

240D

Just aquired an 1981 240D in great shape, 100866 miles on her. Only thing needing clean up is a small amount of rust on the drivers side lower panel edges. Runs great!

'76 240D 230k auto English Red

'79 240D ???k 4-speed Caledonia Green

also '80 280TE 4-speed, all three are
daily drivers. Silver blue, euro model.

The kids drive the orange automatic,
I don't put any time or money into it.
Records show an engine replacement
and just about everything else rebuilt,
repaired or replaced at some time. Current
problems-- backseat bottom and back
pad rotted away, collects pool of water
in right rear passenger floor area and
worst thing, the heater blower is kaput
(115). Starts, drives well.

The green one has a broken odometer,
reads 157k. New rings and valve job
as part of purchase agreement, burns
clean with no smoke. New paint, new
driver's seat springbox and pad, new
coils all the way around which raised
it up a bit but didn't change handling or
feel much.

The stickshift gas wagon is in good shape
and a change of pace from driving the
four banger diesels. I like the diesels
though.

The Dumpling is an 83 with 315k. Runs great, looks great and sounds a bit like Mom's old Singer sewing maching. He is the second favorite car that I have owned (out of 12).

I'll buck the trend and say that I like the alloy wheels. The dark red 240D with those alloys just looks WAY sharp!!

My first 240D had alloys, and I feel that they just finished the car. Now the 240D and the 190Db have the caps, and I'm gonna leave 'em that way. They still look good in their own right.

Greetings all... I am on a road trip with my "85" 240D, 5 speed and am now in the San Francisco bay area. Got almost 33 mpg and used NO oil on the way down from washington state which was allot of back road mountian driving. No problems so far except the back door locks are working very slow so that will be a project I will do when I get a chance, brought the Mighty Vac along. Saw a 240D (auto trans) for sale in the neighborhood here so I went to check it out, nothing spicial except the guy said he was gona have the trailer hitch removed. I offered to remove it for him and give him $10.00, worked out for both of us. have a great day, I will be home in a week or two.

Thumbs up

Had my 75 240D for about a year and a half now. Seems to run better with age has about 120k, it only had 80k documented miles through 97'.

I use it mainly for commuting about 80miles/day. No mech problems, getting about 30 mpg overall average and burn about 1 qt oil/1200 mi. probably due to hardened leaky valve seals.

No rust but I notice minor water leaks accumulating on the rear left floor panel after driving in hard rain. This is a CA car that spent 25 of 27 years in a dry climate garaged most of the time.

240D Roll Call

1980 240D with the unique golden brown colour, 4 speed manual transmission, but no air. I love it but my wife prefers an automatic with air. There are 243,000 miles on it. I've installed euro lights and white face gauges and love the look. With Red Line fluids in the transmission, and differential and semi-synthetic oil in the engine, I get about 33 mpg on the highway. My only problem now is figuring out why my dash lights and horn don't work.

Jim and Mr. Sokoloff,

I don't own a 240 D, but a 190D 2.2. I have a question though: All of my MB's I've owned are older and always need something or another fixed. My question is, what is a 123 like brand new?

Just never bought one new. The only new car I have ever owned is a '96 Z-28. It was fast, but a piece of junk.

I had a 240D manual 1982 model. I bought it new and only put a whopping 2500 miles on it. I sold it about 3yrs ago and I really miss it. It was a fantastic car. It was midnight blue w/ palomino interior. Roll down windows. It was as basic as basic can get!
