Sun Roof adjustments- Need Help

Hello All,

I took my sunroof apart to change the front and rear seals and the felt side seals. Used the search function on this forum and found some good information on how to proceed (as usual).

Have got it all back together but am running into several problems, the front rubber seal does not seem to press into the metal channel properly and doesn't seem to 100% conform to the grove that it is supposed to sit in.

Unfortunately the old one was shredded when I took it out so now I am not sure I am installing it the correct way. It seems to fit tight on the corners but seems loose and floppy on the straight run between the 2 plastic pieces that hold the wind deflector.

Also had to replace the motor and do not know quite how to get the motor to make the sunroof adjust all the way forward. It appears that when it lifts to lock into place, the rear seal has no gap between the roofline and the sliding portion, and the front seal doesn't appear to even be compressing.

Also have tried adjusting the height and now have a problem with one edge in the front being too high yet I have adjusted the rail down as far as it will go. The passenger front appears to be to low and the whole rear section when it is raised all the way up seems to be to low.

Have tried and tried to adjust it but just don't seem to have the right procedure or something is messed up from my reinstallation, even though I marked all the parts in their position on the left and right and marked where they were located on the sliding portion.

Any ideas on how this really needs to be installed.....??

Thanks a lot
Dave

Dave,

It might help if you gave the model and year.

I recently took apart my 82 300D turbo sun roof. It was the first time and it was pretty tricky. There are adjusting screws to raise or lower the front and back of the sun roof. I believe the front should be between even and just slightly lower (1mm max) than the non moving roof and the back should be even or just slightly higher than the fixed roof. This is for aerodynamics, namely noise. maybe you put the adjusting screws over the rail hole instead of under the rail hole. The holes allow you to get a screwdriver in there but they are not for puting the uniquely shaped adjusting screw through them.

The rails and other moving parts must be cleaned and then greased with the special MB sunroof grease. The rear of the rails are hard to get to so use a long tool to get in there to clean and regrease. The MB sunroof grease has the consistancy of Vaseline and is translucent. It doesn't get hard like other greases. A place like Fastlane should have it or check your local dealer. You don't need much so if you can make friends with a tech at a dealer they might spare you a couple of tablespoons worth from their supply which will last a lifetime. DO NOT USE other greases such as lithium or grease gun stuff. The same MB grease can also be used on the cable.

Lubing the cable is VERY important because if it breaks you've got a disaster on your hands. Removing, greasing and reinstalling the cable is a two person job because it's long and tends to flop arround geting everything it touches greasy and when cleaned and regreased it will flop arround and get dirty. The sun roof motor (in the trunk) can be adjusted to get the correct torque. Sorry I can't answer most of your questions as I don't know it by heart since I've only done it once. Hopefully someone else will help you on them.

Finally there was great confusion from MB regarding the replacement felt/rubber and nylon jaws I needed for my roof. I spoke to 3 different dealer parts counters and although most recommended the same jaws each parts guy had some inconsistant jaws for me. Also beware because although some of the jaws are same lt and rt some are specifically for lt or rt.

Good luck,
Elliot

HELP!!! Can someone out there with tech experience check my posts (do a search under erubin) regarding the following:
1. 300d dash lights
2. 300d center vac element
3. 300d r134 conversion
4. 450SL courtesy light
My posts go into details.

Mercedes 1985 300 D

Sorry I didn't put down what year model, it is a 1985 300D. The main problem I am having now is how to install the front seal. I thought it would be obvious, but it does not appear to fit in the channel properly, I anyone remembers how they installed it, it would be a great help.

Also have tickered around somemore with the adjustments, and still can't get the roof aligned to the proper specs. The front corner on the passenger side is up too high and the front corner on the driver side is still too low. I have run out of adjustments on both sides, have checked the adjustment screws, they are underneath the chrome rail where they are supposed to be. I never did take the chrome rails completely off and the rear section of the sliding roof is too low all the way across.

Have again have played with the adjustments on the plastic pieces, but the big problem seems to be that even when it lifts into place, the rear of the sliding roof is just under the fixed roof to where it appears to be chafing or pinching. The whole things seems to need to slide forward.

Thanks a lot

Dave

Sounds like you need to get the front weather stripping seated. If the sunroof isn't coming forward far enough- all your adjustment are way out. I would only mess with the roof adjusments, since that is what you had.

Most of the seal goes down into that little space. On mine, I used a hard plastic piece which glue-in windshield guys gave me. Ive done it a couple of times and each time- seems like it takes me a while to figure it out.

Dave,

There was a notch to clear the sunroof wind deflector. The steel body retaining strip should run the length(I think). Sounds like the full section is not seated in this area. It's possible that the section is a little long. If you pull it in to place(stretching), it will be longer and give corner problems.
It should come around and meet the fuzzy side strips.
