Thumbs up I chipped my '99 E300

Well folks I'm happy to report the chiptuning was a big success. Since Upsolute couldn't get their stuff together, and SpeedTuningUsa had done 12 E300's last year, I gave them the go. The tuning bumped my '99 E300 up from 174hp to 218hp and the torque from 243lbs up to 303lbs. The seat of the pants difference is huge, it feels like a different car. It gave the car a lot more low end grunt right off the start, and maintains it the whole way up the rpm range. Definitely doing more fueling, as WOT emits a pretty steady smoke stream Nothing like the hopped up diesel trucks, but a good bit more than stock. Wow the car is a lot faster, and now feels a little more mated to the H&R springs/Bilstein shocks I highly recommend this to other E300 owners.

P.S. It was only $275 which was VERY cheap IMO, considering my TDI was about $400 and truck mods are a lot more than that.

Here's a dyno chart - Dyno Chart E300

LightMan,

My kids got me some really nice Carlsson 18" wheels for Christmas last year, along with Michelin Pilot Sport AS tires. These really tightened up the steering, but they are not all that compatible with the rest of the suspension set up. I am interested in the springs and shocks you have and to know if you changed any of the suspension bushings as well.

I am pretty impressed with the figures you quoted. Is the actual installation complicated or straight forward? Did you do it yourself?

Thanks for the information, Jim

Jim, luckily I jumped through all the hoops already so you don't have to figure this combo out. The proper setup to get a level/even ride, and enough clearance with 18" wheels for the E300 with Bilstein Sport Shocks and H&R sport springs is -

Front v8(E430/55) spring with #5 spring pad
Rear v6 (E320, E300) spring with #2 spring pad

As for the chipping, I simply removed the ECU, which requires a phillips head screwdriver and one torx driver, and takes about 3 minutes. I then mailed the ECU off next day air to Oliver at speedtuning. The next day he received it, chipped it, and next day aired it back to me. Got it 9am this morning. Gonna go for a drive now!

LightMan,

Thanks, I will be collecting the parts soon enough now. The wheels and tires I have fit fine, they are not well controlled over harsh bumps. I get a little, or in some cases a lot, of skittish and jumpiness over bumps in ordinary driving. Jim

Wow! Can you give us a ballpark figure (stopwatch) of your 0-60 time?

Don't have a stopwatch or g-tech of any kind, all I can say is that it absolutely rips off the line, compared to before where it would kinda bog/lag for a while. I'm back from another drive, and it's awesome. Power is available at all speeds, and I had to turn off my trac control because it was lighting up the tires every time I took off around a turn.

Sounds like the new version of the ALDA adjustment. The engine can handle the power without any problems later down the road.

But what about the transmission? I thought the E300 used the transmission from the E320 and its maximum torque rating was only 244lb/ft?

Congratulations! It was a worthy purchase and every E300 owner should do that as soon as they got their car. POWER AT ALL ENGINE SPEEDS IS A MUST!

(Oh, and lighting up the tires ain't kind to the transmission either. )

Then what you need to rectify that smokin` problem is some of that bean juice you have in the garage.
:p

Glad to see you finally did it. I`m looking for an `87 300TD, wish you could chip one of those.

Do some research on adjusting the ALDA for the '87 300TD. Same idea.

Heheehe. Thats a steady stream of smoke running B20 mixed with 48 cetane(verified) Hess fuel with additives! I bet on straight 40 cetane dog poo diesel it's a smoke fest! Too bad I don't run that stuff!

The information that I received from Gilly the mb tech and spread a while back about E300's having the E320 transmission was partly false. '96 and early '97 do have the 722.3 weaker trans. Second half of '97 and everything after ALL have the 722.6 transmission. Yes your E300 has the same trans as the E55, so mod away. Sure the ratios are slightly different, but it's the same transmission. Found that out thanks to the technical cd I got from another forum member. I was really pumped when I found that out, ordered the chip just a few days after. I wish I would have done this long ago!

Thumbs up

That's incredible! Let us know how your transmission holds up.

Since yours doesn't make any turbo noise, perhaps you should consider replacing the exhaust system with a straight pipe or something of that nature.

edit: just read the part about the E55 transmission. That's just too f'ing cool.

I have wondered about a performance exhaust, but haven't seen any offered for the E300. I believe the stock exhaust has a diesel catalytic converter built into it, which I'd love to get rid of..

Talking

That's easy! Just have an exhaust shop custom make you a 3" system from the turbocharger back. Shouldn't be more than $100 or so. I'm thinking about doing this on the SDL, but the factory exhaust system is still in excellent shape, with just a little bit of rust starting on the center muffler/resonator. Maybe I'll just save the factory exhaust as a garage ornament.
