5 speed gearbox from MB modell 124

Hey! Look what i came across:
http://www.smt.nu/default.asp?Expand=15&Display=24 (Tricky link, refresh or copy/paste)

Quote:
These 2 adapters, together with new bearing for gearbox axle, will allowed to mount a 5 speed gearbox from MB modell 124, in the older MB with 4 speed gearbox. On the pictures is a 5 speed gearbox mounted on an engine from MB 220SE from 1962, but it is possible to do that converting on nearly all other earlier models before 124 models, even the diesels: MB180,190,200,220,230,250,280 and 300.
You have to do some cutting in the transmission housing to accommodate the starter, that's supposedly it.

Price is ~ $330 ex. taxes.

Heard of other people using some of their other adapter plates to OM617 in to Volvos with stock transmission with great results, no complains.

I cant tell how they are clearing the starter, but it looks promising. I f someone wanted one of these in the states, does it say if they will ship overseas?

$330 is far too cheap for the work and fabrication involved.

looking at the pictures they both look like simple laser or water jet parts. apart from the material and the designers time they dont look labor intensive at all. do you have direct experience with this fabricator or this part set?

Well that's the price, 3.000 SEK. Adapters for Volvo M47 to 300D and Range Rover to 300D from the same company are reportedly working fine.

Yes! We need more info from somebody who speaks sweed. (And a picture of the other side of the engine.)

It looks like what they are doing is moving the transmission backwards slightly, blocking off the starter 'wart' on the left side and using the adaptors to create a new one on the right side. The replacement bearing must move the clutch disk forward to compensate for the shifting back of the tranny.

it looks to be about the same thickness as the 300D adapter plate, it looks like the trans is clocked about 15-20 degrees but I think it looks about the same rearward spacing.the pilot bearing difference might just be the pilot diameter on the end of the input shaft may be a different diameter

Great, a 300D flywheel is almost as hard to find as a 5 speed is.

Do you absolutely HAVE to use the 300D flywheel, or is that just what they use since they have them?

How about a Volvo trans?

Also, where are you seeing the prices listed? I must be overlooking them.

I suppose a 240D, or any one for that matter, will do, the shop told me to use my old one.

I mailed them. They've got great response time.

You said that price excludes tax? Thankfully we don't have to pay the 25% VAT in the US, but in general when shipping items from Sweden to the US the amount VAT would add ends up being what it costs to air freight things to us.
Cheapest way to get them here is to do a group buy of them and have them pack everything onto a pallet and send it sea freight. Then someone in the US just unpacks the pallet and sends the plates across the US. I've been involved in several group buys from Sweden that worked this way much much cheaper than airmail.

I'd look elsewhere. We Volvo drivers have a habit of shredding the Volvo M46 and M47 5-speeds with stock power (torque really). Adapterplates are popular for fitting the T5 (Ford and GM) and the Getrag (BMW) to the Volvo motors.
