The radio works very well. All the buttons and the display are fine. The tape player I haven't really diagnosed. Sometimes it will play a tape, Sometimes it will be picky and just eject it. I'm going to try one of those tape head cleaners to see if that helps.

W124 front ashtray needed

Anyone planning to attend the March 29 Diesel Drive have an early W124 front ashtray available? The one in my '87 300D (photo) has a short in the lighter socket that blows fuse #1 whenever it is plugged into the wiring harness. I can't find the source of the short and it looks like the easy fix is simply to replace the ashtray. Anyone have a spare?

its true. when i started seeing this girl... (no need for details, women suck) my Mercedes got really pissed. honestly. I was having to make minor repairs daily for like 2 weeks. I actually made formal introductions introducing the Mercedes to the girl. and from then on the Mercedes stopped the daily breakdowns and went back to the bi-weekly repairs the girl was a good sport too, she thought it was cute that i had to introducer her to the car. and she went to pick and pull with me to get the car parts to win its favor. now the girl is gone and the Mercedes remains. maybe the Mercedes knew something i didn't.

I'll have my camera taking some pictures. I try to get as many as possible, but posting them all is time consuming, but I'll do my best.

Still not sure which car I'll be in. Either the 83 300d or possibly the 95 e300. I wouldn't mind the mileage bump with the current fuel prices.

I was going to drive to Sacto first, stay overnight and meet up with you guys in Sacramento, but I changed my mind. My car was sold new by Smythe European in San Jose. So I decided to drive up on Friday, stop there and garner some Smythe European chrome plated license plate frames. This in no way means I think less of the Von Housen MB in NorCal set that Jim B got for me at the last Diesel Drive. These will be put on another MB when I get one.
I WANT the car to have the original Dealer plate frames.
So that being said I'll drive on to Santa Rosa after a stop in San Jose. Anyone know if there is a Motel 6 or other Cheapy near the Santo Rosa Mtg. Point? All I need is a bed, shower facilities and maybe a TV.
See you all in Santa Rosa.

Getting the original plate frames - more than one way to do it.

I understand your desire to have the original plate frames on the car, I had to go over to Glendale to get a pair of Calstar ones (fourtunately still period correct at the time)

So far as I know, Charlie, SMYTHE EUROPEAN still issues the plate frames in chrome, (Many dealers are going to the cheap black plastic ones now) and you can get them in the parts Department for nothing....

Couple of other options might exist to get them to you in time

1. Ask Zack "Boardmonger" to do it. He lives in Cupertino, and while he does not like that dealer, he might do it as a favor to you. Because he isn't too far away from there (The dealer is on StevensCreek Blvd, off Hwy 290 - I think......)

Maybe he could mail them to you or actually even bring them to the meet...

2. Call up their parts department, or write them a letter and put in $10 for "expenses" and that should get you a pair in the mail.....

If you did that, you could still bunk in West Sacramento (plenty of inexpensive hotels around Harbor Blvd, I think, at least there were, some years ago, and you could "forget" to mention Sulphie was with you....

(Ask for the AAA Auto club discount.....)

That way you could come straignt up I - 5, which would maybe save gas, and avoid going across Highway 152, or "Blood Alley" as it is known, to San Jose....

I am another probably 100 miles northeast of West Sacramento, and if you wish, I don't mind if you bunk at my place, if you don't mind a cot or something, but you would need to figure the cost of 200 miles extra driving in gas, vs. cost of a night's hotel. (sounds like a wash to me, actually) but it would be a way to start out in Sacramento with our wagon train, if you really wanted to do it

If you stay in Sacramento, I could come down that night for dinner with you, always looking for an excuse to show off my new wagon to friends before the new car smell and patina is off of it....
Let us know.
