Question Relocation washer resevoir for bigger air box

I need the collective wisdom of this forum to relocate my W124 300TE washer resevoir, to make room for a bigger airbox from a C36, and the heatshield from a W124 diesel.

Unfortunately I don't have the room near the intake manifold to install the washer resevoir from a W124 diesel, nor the space for the W202 resevoir above the ABS/ASR unit.

Any suggestions? Please post pictures of other Mercedes washer resevoirs as well.

Thanks in advance,
:-) neil

Picture index is as follows:

1) my W124 360TE wagon engine bay;
2) W124 diesel engine bay (note heatshield);
3) W202 C36 engine bay (note bigger airbox)

Neil:

Could you adapt one of those thick walled Nalgene Poly bottles to an unused space and your washer motors and lines? They have large round and square containers, including heavy duty at
http://nalgenelab.nalgenunc.com/products/catalog/productgroup.asp?pgroupId=109

Or maybe the washer reservoir from a sub compact might be small enough to fit the odd space, perhaps by the battery or ABS unit, and already have mounting straps and pump motors in place.

Finally, how about the trunk? My 84 Celica GTS has a rear mounted reservoir and pump for the rear hatch washer, and so do some SUVs. maybe run some brake line metal tubing under the car up to the engine compartment?

Just some thoughts.

Hmmm-I think I've got a solid suggestion, although the Nalgene bottle's a great one...

Now, if you can stuff a C36 motor in a TE, you can do this-run wires and hosing from the rear bottle to the front (JCE-good call 'cuz there's one back there like your Celica)...the hose to feed the front spray jets, the wiring from the front to the rear to activate a rear pump.

Idea is, when you call for a front wash, have it activate the rear pump to spray both front & rear simultaneously. If you really don't want to hose the rear of the car, then you'd need to install a 2nd pump into the rear reservoir.

This is certainly possible-just drill a hole in the top of the tank equivalent to all the others (clearly avoiding interference with the hinged door-1st aid kit might have to move, though), insert another rubber-grommeted pump, and rig some sort of pickup tube from that pump down to the bottom of the rear reservoir. And there's plenty of space to run the few wires and tubing down the passenger side. I can detail further if you like regarding how I'd suggest you run all this front to back (having 3 W124s and done stereos in 2 of them, I've learned a lot and would hope to save you some hassle).

Maybe you'll refill a bit often, but it gets you some prime Real Estate under the hood. Good luck compadre

I guess I could run a line all the way back to wagon's cargo bay, but it just seems so wrong . . .

Perhaps, I'm not thinking out of the box . . . engine box that is :p

Anybody else?

I was wondering if they can put the coolant overflow tank in the fender, how about the same thing for the washer resevoir with a tube to refill . . .

That's a Japanese car trick-check out Honda & Toyota bottles if that's what you're considering. Maybe room also up inside the bumper for such a setup??

Wow, did not know that the Japanese cars did that. I thought it was only MB that was (IMHO stupid enough) to place the overflow for the coolant resevoir in the fender.

Has anyone taken apart their fender to actually see how it's mounted and how much room?

I'm doubtful because one side is the overflow, and the otherside is the charcoal cannister.

I meant the washer bottle-Japanese cars often have them buried down in the front bumper or a little aft in front of the wheelwell, with filling by tube from above and a foam float to give an estimate of volume.

Maybe do a walkaround in a boneyard??

Neil,
The idea of the tank and pump in the rear is not bad and there won't be any time delay to use the spray if as long as you make sure there are one-way check valves in the lines. It's not like you are waiting for the water to come out the end of a hose to wash your car, it will be there when you need it.

Hey Neil. Mike has some good suggestion. You know the new style TE have a dual vane pump. It works with a reverse polarity.
When you ask to pump to rear it does. Also if you want to pump to the front it does. They come on new 210 chasis wagons.
With this pump you can install it in the rear. But be advise its a high volume pump. . It takes heavier hose. There is also alot of room in the fenderwell if you ever removed yours. Theres some room to make something work there. Do you think that airbox will make that much different. Did you modify that stock one you have now. Internally. Almost a way that you port and polish a head you do the same to that one. Are all the baffles and restrictions removed.

Goodluck Guido. PS did you end up running the 500E coils on anything yet.
