Mini Meds are offered by most major medical companies and TPA's. Wise-Benifit is one of the larger marketers (Brokers) of these plans and most the states. Mini Meds is trade jargon for this type of insurance. Wise Benifit's web site will give you an idea of how they work - remember they are a broker and they charge for telling you what you now know. Save dollars and go to major insurance companies direct - you don't need an agent if you were to file a claim it will be with the insurance carrier not the broker. Google mini meds and you will find a months worth of reading.

I'm 40 and am in great shape.
I have a high deductible because I don't expect to get sick anytime soon. My monthly cost is about $130. I set up the policy myself as I'm self employed. Check out Unicare. The offer insurance in CA too. Here's the link to Unicare: http://www.unicare.com/home.html

Me and my wife both pay $200 a month (for the 2 of us) for a PPO plan with a low deductible....but then its not a private individual plan.

Forget HSA if you don't have consistent medical problems they are like overpaying taxes so you get a check from the IRS each year. Look into a Mini-Med policy or a catostrophic health plan. These generally don't take care of Dr. visits but if you were in a serious accident would shield you from the brunt of health care expenses. Call your local BC BS office (dont call an agent) and inquire about such. We offer 3 plans with our company and encourage everyone to have some coverage. Our plan 3 is $8 week Blue Cross with Rx. Very popular with the young healthy workforce we have.
