And this coming Monday, the 19th, will be 25 years for Randy Rhoads. A terrible waste, both of them.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Lowell George yet. Not that he was that great of a guitarist, but man, could he ever write songs & put together a band, or an album. I sort of "came of age" when Little Feet were just making it big. I recall seeing 3 shows 3 consectutive nights at Lisner Auditorium in DC in the early to mid 70's. May he rest in peace. I believe I actually cried when I heard of his demise. I still have the article from The Washington Post tucked into a vinyl jacket somewhere.

Great solo. In fact, to me that IS the song. Take the soaring guitar part away and it sounds good but not the same.
Give me a "high five" dude. We must be tuned in.

Billy Gibbons had one of the BEST guitar tones in rock and roll. Period.

He may credit it to the ragged amps they had in the early days... but it's mostly the PLAYER. He's a bada$$.

Not trying to knock your favorite...

But I never could stomach Boston, for one reason: The guitar tone.

I always thought they had great songs, great players, great arrangements, a great singer, great guitar leads...

But the actual guitar TONE, with Schotlz's signature "Rockman" pre-amps that he designed, is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me... So thin and abrasive. His sound was everything I DON'T like to hear in a rock and roll guitar sound.

But ya' know what they say about opinions and *********s....

IMHO Brian May's a horrable player.

Improvising is increadably important, and so is coming in ON TIME. (see Steely Dans' rock and roll hall of fame introduction)

I nearly Puked.

Scholz is definitely unique and not for everybody. I happen to love Boston and am actually grieving in a way at Brad Delp's passing. However, if you had to name 5 guitar players that could be identified by almost anyone on the planet after hearing 3 notes (hell, 1 note), Scholz would have to make the list. Scholz, Hendrix, Page, Clapton; Satriani would be the first 5 to come to my mind.

This thread has had me thinking about great guitar since it started, and I was thinking about tone tonight as I went home from work. Who do you think has the great tone? I think as far as rhythm guitar is concerned, its James Hetfield, hands down. Its thick and evil, but at the same time clean and crisp. Everything that great heavy guitar music should be. For lead I'm leaning towards Brian May, who I find to be rich, warm and soulful. Almost aristocratic, like a gypsy violin player.

Who would you pick?
