I was VERY MUCH into stereo equipment until family priorities pulled me away from it. My home system was quite fantastic years ago, but I believe it's mainstream now...

My MBs are OEM, but when I got into the car stereo circuit, my VW was my platform. This was before IASCA, and CAN (Car Audio Nationals) had only been around for a couple of years.

In-dash CDs were state-of-the-art then, and a lot of ancillary goodies (fuse holders, capacitors, crossovers) were not off-the-shelf items, so you had to fabricate everything...I mean, EVERYTHING!!!

I competed with a Nakamichi TD-1200 cassette deck (back then, the absolute best auto cassette unit made. Power was supplied by a Blaupunkt amp for the eight separates front and rear, and an Alphasonik amp for the two 10" Pyle woofers.

It was a modest system, (270 watts into 4 ohms total), good enough to trophy in local shows, but couldn't compete with the big guns in the regional.

Wouldn't even think of doing that again...takes a TON of money to be a national contender these days...

In the process of getting a new sound system and reading with interest what the rest of you are using. Had the pleasure of being entertained by kerry's new amplifiers in the 300se. It was like sitting in an auditorium and having your world dance simply by listening.

I can only imagine hours of orchestral magic accompanying wherever the MB takes... bliss

Stock Mercedes BOSE sound system (8 speakers supplied by a 200(?)Watt Amp.
And I have a 300 Watt Amp powering a 10-inch sub. It's perfect, for me anyway. Any more Bass would be too much.
And a 10 disc CD Changer.

Hey Mike.......If your radio only plays Country and Western, you better throw it out and get a new one!

Audiophile not, Audionut yes

That would be me. The Benz stereo is plain sucky B*se. I don't see any need to upgrade My home setup right now includes...

Magnepan 1.6QR
Classe CAP150 (used as preamp)
One pair of VTL MB250 monoblocks
Kimber silver cable and interconnects
Calaudio CL15 CD player
Tice power conditioning

That's it, straightforward. Future upgrades:

PSAudio powerplant
Magnepan 3.6r
Sony Superaudio CD player

Kuan...
I have a friend with a 1999 ML430 with BOSE. The sound seemed pretty decent to me...
that is, until you got into the back seat!! Back seat sound was so incredibly crappy, I can't even believe Mercedes made a BOSE stereo that sounded so... lifeless.

I also don't like the head unit stereo in the MLs... why did the make them different?!

The Mercedes Bose in the 500 SL is a verryyyyyy crappy. It was replaced with a Eclipse head unit and speakers and it improved dramatically I wish Benz could do the factory sound like Lexus/Toyota. You would think a $80,000 car would have a decent stereo but that is just not the case. I must add that even Ferrari which used to have pretty shappy systems (1 speaker) are better that MB.
