Different circumstances, and many here would have advocated blowing the cop away for entering the home without a warrant or permission of the tenant. Man's home is his castle. Let's see this policeman try this technique on a white guy in Texas.

I really doubt if the officers arrested him for no reason.

Also, and per Gates in the interview. The officer asked for identification, and HE had to go into the kitchen to get it.
SO when the officer entered his house he had NO IDEA it WAS his house.

So we go back to the other comments, the officer asks for ID, you respond it's my house, and the officer leaves.
Or he waits at the front door for you to get your id, as you exit out the back.

I was surprised that Obama even waded into this...not sure why he did that. Moment of emotional weakness or was it calculated on his part for some reason?

I also cannot understand calling the Cambridge police 'stupid'...there are about a dozen other more suitable terms that come to mind...'hasty', 'misguided', etc. but 'stupid'? That's a pretty callous remark from a President.

It was a weird moment from Obama, that is for sure.

Trouble comes in many forms.
Charges against Gates have been dropped. Civil actions against the police may be filed.

On this point I agree. Obama should have been more circumspect in his comments.

Didn't someone back when say that the porch was not quite under that same rule? I know I can have sex with girls in the house. However, I am not so sure about doing the same on the porch. Try sitting on your porch in the nude playing with yourself if you feel like you have a case. If brought to court, tell the judge that it is your property and you can do as you please just like it was in your bedroom.

What's your point? That doesn't mean much, does it? First off, the cop can cite you for whatever he pleases. It is up to the prosecutor to decide if the charge should go on, is it not? Next, do you believe that Obama weighing in on it has no effect whatsoever?

I think Obama commented on it because he and Gates are in roughly the same situation. Successful, wealthy black men who still might be subject to racism in their lives. So he can easily imagine the situation.
Not so sure I'd say the cops were stupid on national television, even though I think they were. Arresting Gates was about as smart as mistakenly arresting the national director of MADD for drunk driving.

Obama was asked about the arrest of Gates, who is his friend, at the end of a nationally televised news conference on health care Wednesday night.

They are also friends, I think Gates had a case of Barack's got my back syndrome.

As I posted earlier, I think both sides were being *******s in their own way. BOTH men SHOULD have been smarter than their actions. I think it would behoove both of them to offer the other an apology. End of story.

Perhaps so but when you go provoking a cop, you have no grounds for complain about him cuffing you for whatever flimsy reason.
