Nice looking horse. Is she a bit smallish and thus an acceptable riding horse?

A friend of mine up in WA state has had horses for years, operates summer riding and winter sledding excursions at present near Leavenworth, WA.

He's a big fella, about 6-5, 280 or so. Played offensive line for Woody Hayes. When I hung with him back in the late 80s his favorite riding horse was a 3/4 Thorougbred - 1/4 Belgian. I rode him once - very smooth, a bit larger than I wanted but riding just about any horse hurts my knees, dammit. Wrapped around that big rib cage doesn't work for me real well.

About 10 years ago, I saw an acquaintance at a fair up in Eastern WA just after he'd bought two Clydesdale mules. I was astounded. Looked a lot like Clydesdales but had the mule's ears. It dawned on me that I'd heard the phrase "draft mules" before. He uses them and a number of Belgians for logging, up near the Canadian border.

Don't you know some donkey can't believe his eyes when they bring him in, on his own platform no less, to service the high class beautiful bundle of horseflesh before him? And some Clydesdale stallions nearby are going on about "what the hell's that runt doing going in to see Shirley?

They used to use them for pulling carts for milk delivery 50+ years ago.
There is an old stable her on the farm, we are always finding old horse shoes, they are that big they could have only come from a clydey.
Great animal, you may need a set of steps if you want to get up on it to ride!
In the country near here there are several tourist businesses that hire out camper carts pulled by them for people to have slow traveling holidays! Yes they make a 240D look fast!!!

Now after you have the Clydesdale, how about a dog and starting your own Budweiser ad
Great horse, well done

First of all, that's not me in the saddle. We're getting Cherry through a relative and that pic is of him. Don't know anything about the other hayburners since that was taken up at his stables in OK and we're down here in Texas.

I positively wouldn't go into this horse business, particularly sight unseen, without the help of Doc. I have complete faith in his judgment and experience.

That said, this promises to be a whole new experience for us since we've never owned a horse but, the idea of having one here at the farm has been talked about many times. Recently, Doc was visiting us we asked him to keep an eye out for a gentle draft horse that could carry me or SWMBO (I'm about 265#) without a problem. Doc and Cherry crossed paths earlier this week at his clinic and the rest, as they say, is history.

My moo-cows will not know what to think about a horse, especially one that's at least 2X the size of the donkeys.

BTW, that was the first time the mare had been tacked up in about 7 months.

The draft mule thing has crossed my mind. Neighbor to the south has a pair of jacks...one of them is dumb as box of rocks but the other is completely different: first time you come across him, he looks you over with an inquisitive eye then comes up to meet you. Nice slick, dark coat too. Hmmm.

My BIL in arkansas a few years back got interested in breeding mules for riding. He is an old mountain lion hunter (Arizona) and has an affinity for riding Mules.

His goal was to breed a variety of riding mules and had a whole selection of Jacks and horses varying from little Burros to very tall Jacks and from shetland ponies to Belgian Drafts. When we visited he had a new colt which was white but had swrilies in his coat which made it look as if he would turn into an Appaloosa mule. BIL was very excited about that prospect as he had never seen nor heard of an appaloosa mule.

I have always been fascinated by Mules.

I read an article about the mules they use to ride down into the Grand Canyon. The fellow in charges said that he would go through 400 mules to find only one which would be calm enough to trust on the precarious trails on the edge of the canyon. They have 200 total mules in their stable or so.

Apparently the disposition of mules can be quite diverse.

When you need heavy work done with four legs its hard to beat a mule.

Sorry for the hijack......nice Mare!

Handsome horse. Remember, a horse is a hole in the pasture you pour money into. Around here, if I can't milk it, collect it's eggs or eat it I'm not interested in feeding it.
We had a couple of Shire horses when I was a kid, big as most Clydes. Salt and Pepper. They had been used to haul a milk wagon many years before that but were long retired and mostly served as jungle gyms for the kids. They weren't ridden, but we could climb all over them, jump off, hang from their necks and have a big old time as long as we had a carrot or sugar cube for them.

When Cherry gets to her new home post some more pictures please. She looks about as powerful as the horse I'm learning to ride. I started riding a real old boy - a bit like an old Land Rover Series 3. Then I got upgraded to a Ferrari (she was small but fast) - and now I ride on the new Maserati Quattroporte the riding school has just bought...

... I'm still a car nut even when it has four legs...

I used to be into horses. I got into antique Mercedes because it's a cheaper hobby.
