Some of the best cats I've known we're feral gone house cats.
It's tough. They can be very charming creatures. I can see why all of the lonely ladies latch onto them. A mean cat though? F*ck no point to keeping one. |

All of the Cats I take care of now are feral Cats. The 2 sisters were born under my house but only one is close to being a pet. The other Sister seldom lets me touch her but seem happy to see men. I feed a largish male Cat that is a con artist. One day I swong the front door open and there he was crying and standing up on his hind legs to be fed. (My neighbor leaves her back Door open ant the Cat just walks on in.) The female Cats are fixed. I feed him but I think he has a rout of Old Ladies that feed him. If he gets tired of what I give him he disappears for a few days and comes back. I am trying to restore this bugger to some sort of health but after a week it ran off and then yesterday came back. I way worse shape except it appears that he can see better not. It does not cost much to feed them. Since this Cat is not doing so well I believe that it could be a Pet that someone abandon. If the Momma Cat does not get to teach them how to Hunt they are kind of left with scavenging for garbage that they can eat. When the Cats born under my house were kittens I saw the Momma Cat many times bringing them Gophers to eat. They learned to Hunt and when older I only fed them one time a day for a year or so they learned to get their own food. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/off-topic-discussion/399373-cat-hospice-post3935850.html#post3935850

I don't believe in feeding a whole bunch of strays as they reproduce way faster then I imagined. Some people live trap the Strays and go to places where they will fix a limited number of them and then release them after they are fixed. The clip a piece off of the tip of one ear to show they have been fixed. Getting back to the feeding strays issue. The local County Hospital has a big grounds. I walked by in part of their facility and there was a huge pan of food and like 30 Cats eating from it. That sort of thing must have yielded a huge crop of babies. I like Cats but when the remodeled a lot of the buildings the did away with the Cat feeding. I went to the local Animal Shelter to get a Cat and was told I could not have one because I put on the Form the it would be an inside outside Cat. Their claim was Coyotes. There is a map of the Coyote Pet killings and there is none on my side of the River. Over on the richer side of the river there was some (pets must be better fed and therefore tastier over there). On 2 occasions early in the morning on the weekends on 2 separate occasions I have seen solitary Coyotes walking around in the Industrial area 1/4 mile away. I have never seen any in my neighborhood. The Streets are more narrow on this side of the River and there is Allies and the Population density is more and lots of people own Dogs here. Lots of places that only take a shot run and or jump for Cats to escape to. Started off one Cat and years later 4 were born under my House. One was a loner and liked to find stuff in the middle of the road to roll around on and got here head run over and the only Male got bit by something and while his wound healed fine and after a $700 vet bill he died anyway. The first Cat died of cancer leaving me with 2 sisters. At night the 2 Sisters seem to mostly roam around together and I believe that helps keep them safer then if they were alone. If one runs the other automatically runs also.

Feral Animals
As long as you're willing to fix them I have no problem with feeding strays but no one wants to be bothered trapping then taking them to the Vet......
? Does L.B. have it's own animal pound(s) ? . If not L.A. has plenty and is trying very hard to be a no kill shelter, there's one in San Pedro right on the North side of the hill, just off the Harbor Freeway . Just tell them it'll be an indoor pet and you're good to go . I never knew about the clipped ear thing, that's clever and helpful, thanks . My pups are neutered and chipped . Neutering cats makes them *much* (as in vastly) happier and better pets, the need to fight and mate is part of nature's pan to ensure any particular area has a defined population, I don't like seeing wounded cats & etc. die . Dang ~ SWMBO says go fire up the grille...... A few minutes later . You're fooling your self if you think Long Beach doesn't have coyotes ~ they range from the mountains to the sea, I see then in every part of So. Cal. . They're "protected" so don't get caught killing / trapping them but they're a serious pest and need to be eliminated every where they're in town .

What I said was on the other side of the River in Long Beach is where the Map showed Coyotes killing Pets. Seal Beach even more so has the problem. To get to Long Beach the Coyotes can simply walk from the Mountains down the Flood Control Channels/Rivers LB has an Animal Shelter but right now I have as many Cats as I feel I can manage. Note that on the West Side/poorer side there is the River, a Bicycle Trail on top of the Bank and a continuous Wall until you get to the main Streets. On the Rich side there is the Bicycle Trail followed by a Chain Link Fence that has many openings for Walk Ways or stairs to get to the Bicycle Trail no continuous wall. So the Coyotes take the easiest way and go into the Rich area. Note my Father lives in Leisure World in Seal Beach. It is a cross the street from a large Military reserve air base which allows farming on it and adjacent is a Navel Weapons station that is underground storage for ammo and other weapons also with a huge farming area all the way down to Seal Beach. Leisure World is heavily populated with Cotton Tails as I guess the farms are. Lots of food to attract and support a population of Coyotes.

Around here we trap, fix, clip the ear, and release. Just got another one last week, he will be a good mouse chaser in the woods out back.

....By neutering, I think that's a good idea .
When I was in L.A.P.D. Air Support the Ca. State's fruit fly shop was next door ~ they bred millions of sterile fruit flies and let them go, this served to quickly and sharply reduce the fruit flies that decimate local produce farms . The down side was : _they_ worked in a sealed building, we got thousands of fruit flies all day long , in our eyes, ears and mouths.....
