Have your spelling skills diminished?
I just struggled to spell sheriff. I couldn't remember if it was one R, two F's, or whatever. Prior to all this internet stuff I used to just write the word on a sheet of paper and if it looked right it generally was correct.
Anyway, early onset senility or fault of the internet?

I think my spelling has improved with the use of computers. The type as you go spell checkers have helped me a lot.
Sorry to be contrary as usual...

Age may be part of it. I'm curious as to how much of it, if any, is the result of a significant portion of one's reading consisting of on-line content in which the writers don't bother with correct spelling (or grammar, or punctuation). Sadly, a lot of folks also don't bother with - or are incapable of - sound reasoning! |

I've noticed the same thing. I tried to spell hemmerhoids about 5 different ways yesterday before I gave up and wrote asteroid.
Could it be a typing versus a writing thing? The spelling gets associated with movements of the hand when writing? Typing movements are different????

Hard to say, but sometimes even the correct spelling just looks weird to me. Especially if I look at a word for a long time.

I only post at work so I can use spell check on Outlook, it’s no fun replying to a post trying to help someone out and someone else gives you a hard time because you misspelled something.
Now that I do use a computer at work my spelling has gotten better. I also use Google when Outlook has no clue what I am trying to spell. I finished school but that was when they would just push you through and give you a diploma no test required for the resource kids. Thank you HEB school district. NOT It’s all good I have a good job house and a couple cars, I think I am doing good and that’s what counts.

I attribute part of the decline in spelling or acceptance of errors to word processors and electronic communication. When you wrote or typed, you didn't want to mess up because fixing it was difficult so a bit more thought was involved. That evolved into easy corrections before "going final." Now people count on the computer to recognize and fix errors, so they don't care whether it's right or wrong. |

The other day, while typing the eamil, I scanned it real qucik and noticed a word that didn't quite look right. I retyed it several differnet ways, and none looked right. Retyped it the way it was originally, and it was correct. Crazy.

Word Perfect is based on a little book by ' Strunk and White' called ' The Elements of Style'... it is small enough to keep close by and does not mince words on what is correct. ( if you want to look educated and get your ideas across in English )....

See, I knew there was a reason I stuck with WordPerfect. Everyone who needs to communicate in English should have a copy of The Elements of Style and should read it often. It is my favorite book.

I think the "acceptance" thing regarding general tolerance for poor spelling is true.
Daughter got recruiting letters from the coaching staff of one college in particular that was riddled with spelling errors and poor grammar! We kinda crossed that one off the list!
