The term 'Dunce' was, and still is, a technical term.
The source of the term is an English 'scholar' named Duns Soctus who died in 1306. He wrote a book that covered all the knowledge in the known world and it became the accepted standard in English education. Once you had mastered Duns' book you were qualified to be addressed as a 'Dunsman'. This was considered the highest level of education attainable and was a necessary title to hold if one desired a teaching position. Dunsmen, and only Dunsmen, were entitled to wear the pointed cap that signified their rank in society. By the 1500's it had become clear that not just much of what Duns' had put down was wrong but that all of it was. But Dunsmen continued to teach from Duns' book as they had spent their lives working towards their positions and did not wish to give them up. By the 1600's all the Dunsmen had died out. The Dunce Cap lived on and became the symbol we know today: That of a person who is wrong and yet continues to make the same mistakes even after they have been corrected. The term 'Dunce's table' first appears in print in 1624. The term 'Retard' is a slur and has always been a slur. The term 'Dunce' is a description and has always been a description. To quote the ancient Greeks: If the shoe fits, wear it. |

Now I don't want anyone claiming that I support going around calling people "retards", I'm just growing weary of people vilifying the word. As I mentioned in my first post in this thread, moron and idiot were once commonly used professional terms as well, it's just that as the public becomes aware of them, they are often twisted to be used as insults. Frankly, I don't think it matters what words are used, people will continue to insult each other all the same. And they'll do so un-impeded by society, because society is busy arguing over which particular word is being used. MV |

One I still get wrong most of the time is the term for the segment-of-our-population-with-much-darker-skin-pigmentation.
I thought colored was a good term, as it aptly described a large segment (very INclusive, which is, like, totally PC....) And it's still the NAACP....right?? ![]() African-American doesn't take into consideration people of a similar pigmentation who AREN'T from Africa, regardless of how many generations you go back. Negroes... we're not filming a sequel to Roots....Blacks... I use this term, don't know if I'm allowed to or not. The "N" word has the biggest swing of opinion. First of all, the word really does not define any kind of color, rather it is a term meant to define a certain pattern of behavior, but the boat has sailed on fighting that change in meaning. (Hey Martureo, see any parallels to 'marriage'.... ) Every use is considered a serious breach of PC protocol , unless it is used between members of a similar pigmentation segment, then it's cool.... ![]() Guess I'll just stick with this.... "If it sounds hurtful, it probably is, and if you have heard it used as an insult, pick a different word" oh... unless you want to be an insulting DB, which seems like the intent of the OP.

Anything the annointed one does is acceptable (if not applause-worthy). By implying otherwise (or even suggesting the possibility), you are clearly a racist. Now do you understand? |
