Let's see what the investigation says. Mechanical failure is a possibility.

I gotta agree with you on this one Brian. The approach into that runway can be visually deceptive. Reports seem to indicate fog had just recently cleared.

Look at the trail of debris all the way back to the sea wall. I suspect it is giong to come out pilot error because of low approach.

Combination of malfunctioning radar altimeter, inop navigation aids at SFO, plus pilots flying the gauges not the plane?

Clear weather, light winds. The ILF was by no means necessary (thousands of planes land across the world every week without it). So far it looks like pure pilot error; no point in trying to make excuses for incompetence.

Don't know if this mobile link will play on regular pcs, but this guy was filming and caught it all. Still a miracle that only two died.

Similar 'landing' short of the threshold at LHR was ice pellets in the RR engine fuel supply.

Not always PE.

No surprise.

The situation with BA and the RR engines bears no resemblance to this accident, and you know it.

Well, the RR engine fuel system has been redesigned and I doubt other engine builders..ie" GE, didn't get to check theirs too.

Now lookee here...I said it is not always PE, not, it couldn't be. The jet had just descended from 350 so it was in -55f air temperatures just like the BA flight.
Just tryin' to give the poor PiC a break.

Seems now he was a NooB on the 777.

I'm in for PE too. I stayed @ a Holiday Inn last month, so I feel comfortable with the guess.

Yeah, that's it! Ice pellets over San Francisco Bay in July!

Look folks. The NTSB has already released the most important information in the info from the flight recorders. It tells the story that allows for a conclusion that is probably 99% accurate. They allowed it to get low and slow. That's it. The rest of the investigation is formality.

The only thing left to determine is the exact procedural issue that led to it.
