Woke up this morning to about 4" of fresh wet snow. Another three or four inches have fallen today. The last few days I have been working to get my plow truck operating. We installed a new pump motor on the plow a year or so ago so I never expected any trouble with that. Wrong!

The motor was seized up. I took it apart and lubricated it. No luck. Then I pulled off the end and found a broken and stuck brush. I ran around and bought a new one of those yesterday and installed it....still seized. I pulled it apart more last night and found the magnets inside the motor casing were broken up.

So I bought a whole new pump motor and installed it this morning, taking care to seal up the cracks with silicone to prevent moisture inside the motor. Works smooth as silk.

I also bought a flashing yellow light for the roof....the light works like a charm.

The snow is so heavy I cannot push it very far with the blade sitting straight with the truck.

The yellow light makes me so official I may try pulling some folks over and giving them a citizens arrest. (just kidding).

Well, I do my house, my rental house behind and several of my neighbors houses plus my sidewalks and parking lot for my commercial building downtown. I enjoy it and might even save money at it with my little 87 Montero with a 6' blade. I take it really easy so I don't break anything any more than necessary.

We've got 6-10" forecast for the overnight. Currently 17* but they're claiming we're going to get 1/10-1/4" of ice on top of it through the morning. I put fresh gas in my trusty Ariens, that's probably the same vintage as I, and it fired up second pull. I'm as ready as I'm going to get!

I made good money through H.S. and college pushing snow. Then after my wife stopped working after kid#1 (and through kid #4) I put a 6.5' plow on my Jeep and picked up 14 residential accounts around my hood, most of them were retirees. We had a load I snow 3 years ago and I cleared over $5500 in cash. After 5 years of not breaking anything and never needing to replace the original clutch (75K miles) I figured it was time to quit while I was ahead and sold it, effectively getting out of the business. And I don't miss it a bit!

Although after snowblowing last winter, I'm thinking the Suburban could use a plow. Heat, music and a coffee holder has its appeal. Besides I want to be able to retire my father and his tractor from plowing. But that's it!

It wasn't a mog, but I can't find a google image of an M35 (deuce-and a half military truck) version - rear mounted diesel engine to drive a 3 row snowblower - thing was excellent. painted civilian yellow. The description said, in so many words "needs a bunch of work and wont run right now" so I wasn't going to jump on it. And we never get that much snow in OH anyway.....yet...

oh well. I'm staying clear of ladder-frame vehicles, mostly so I dont get tempted to buy a snow plow, or a boat, or any other large equipment

Hey now! I'll have you know it was a veggie garden bed!

I broke down and hired someone to do the business sidewalk this year. I didn't dread this forecast as much as I dreaded previous ones.

Those old municipal/airport Oshkosh snowblowers are bad @$$, could probably pick up a small car and redeposit it in small pieces a hundred yards away.

I broke down & hired someone to clear leaves from my yard this fall. He's a disabled USCG vet. Good job. Good cause. $20/hr tho .


No snow here yet this season. Cold rain aplenty however. Sun due out later. Eagles party @ 12:30.

Is it that time of year already? Thanks for the reminder. A part that turns the drive wheels broke on my snow blower a year ago and I still have to disassemble and see what’s wrong. I hope it’s just a pin or something as the blower has been used only about 12x. Another POS crapman labeled fiasco. I also have to put the plow attachment on my lawn tractor, along with the chains and 60 lb bag of gravel. That's about a 2 hour long task. And the plow is good for up to about a foot of not too heavy snow, at least for the first part of winter....

Then there is the best solution of all – the number of a neighbor who has a mid-sized Deer 4wd tractor with a front loader bucket. He charges me about $40 per plow which isn’t bad given that the driveway is pretty long.

Last year, at the peak (and everywhere else), the snow grew to about 4' deep, and lingered for nearly 6 months. The year before it was over 5' deep.
