Might work, we have the "war on terror" to rationalize the military industry complex and police force now, so we can retire the "war on drugs".
The war on terror should keep the populace afraid enough, until a real war in Asia can light off.

The resulting effect: a drastic reduction in addicts,
If a Alcoholic is always and Alcoholic why isn't an Addict always an Addict? Or did the article mean that it reduced the number of People becoming new Addicts? Is it possible that something the works in another Country might not work here or even be too expensive here? Remember We sill have not converted to the Metric System. Comment from the Article " zeek Guest December 17, 2013 12:12 pm Sadly would never work in America because people can't even agree to help each other with normal medical care and treatment much less giving it to people who have drug problems."

If it can be shown that the approach being tried in Portugal is more effective at bringing about improvement in the drug addiction phenomenon than prison sentences than perhaps the prison time thing is what is wrong.

Even so, does the fact that we already have an untold number of alcoholics make it a good idea to add an untold number of junkies? Yeah, that right there is some great logic. ![]() |

Not sure about this and I could be wrong, but I believe we already have a lot of junkies. Sticking them in the cooler hasn't worked. This is not a reason to continue doing so.
More importantly, who owns your body? |

From the comments posted on the page linked to above.
"Higzy Guest December 16, 2013 1:06 pm The US would NEVER adhere to such policies because those with interests in Private Prisons will NEVER allow it. They are part of a large group of scumbag lobbyists who pay 100s of millions of dollars annually for the closed-door meetings where bribes take place, money exchanges hands and it is kept out of the public spotlight. Make no mistake about it -- these would be criminal offenses, but with the money they have, they hold enough power to grant themselves immunity to the laws they impose on everyone else. Portugal used common sense in their approach to decriminilizing and have a far more sensible and responsible government than the US. Funnily enough, the US boasts being 'Land of the Free', 'with liberty and justice for all'... yada yada.. LOL" |

In the past criminal organizations were involved with numbers games, drugs, alcohol and protection rackets. They still are but they call themselves something a little different.

Arguably worse than addictions.

I'm an occasional social drinker. I've been known to drink to the point impairment but generally no further than that. I've also gone months without a drink and never felt the need to. I dabbled with pot in HS and college, wasn't really my thing. I'd politely take a toke, or four, and pass it on to the folks that really enjoyed it. Although I'm not opposed to it, it's probably been 20 years since I've partaken.
It sounds like a pretty rational approach to me. I don't think I've approached druggy status. Or have I? ![]() ![]()
