Oh no Bot! Now you have me frightened. Think of all those WWII Springfield assault rifles floating around. What about the Civil War muskets?

Now you've done it! You've let the cat out of the bag!

Gasp! And it takes and 8 round CLIP!! Gasp!! If this thing had a pistol grip or shoulder thing that goes up ^TM then it would be such a horrible baby killing machine

But alas it doesn't and it has a nice warm walnut grain and killed Nazis so it wins

Also, it's not an assault rifle, it's a battle rifle

Correct, En Bloc. Stripper clips can be used for other internal magazine fed rifles like a Mosin 91/30 or loading M4 magazines faster( I've never seen them in action)

In the Marksmanship Program you end up with a used as is where is M1 Grand and you need to fix it up if needed. But, I am guessing that the cost is a lot less.
It's from the CMP. Springfield that was around during the war is no more. The current Springfield Armory is a different entity riding on the old name. The cmp takes them out of crates, cleans them up and grades them for sale.

Illegal under the NY Safe act I beleive, high capacity and all that.

I'd keep that rifle as is, if you want a pretty one go buy a brand new M1A and you can put whatever stock you want on it. Typically restoring older firearms is a bad idea. One day I'm going to drop the money and have my FN49 restored to new condition, but that gun doesn't have any historical value to lose by doing so.

This generation of battle rifles were really the last of the battle field Rolls Royce's before cheap stamped guns took over and modern plastics came into use. The M1 series, FN49, SVT40, K43, and the Swiss STGW 57 which really is a Rolls Royce in terms of cost and machining.

This thread reminds me of my dad buying a remington 03a3 through NRA more than 50 years ago. It cost him like $32 and was brand new packed in its original cosmoline & wrapped in a kind of heavy brown waxed paper. One of my brothers still has it.

The Cadillac of M1 Garands were made by BREDA, and a few by Beretta, after the war on the Winchester production machines which the US sold to the Italians. I've got one in near mint condition, it's a good companion for my wartime Winchester M1.

Not mine but on my buy list, its the most modern rifle that's legal in my state. Probably a Super Match and I'll throw some Ziess glass on it. I like that stock, that's why I have that picture.

Do you know who did the mods? That's a lovely piece of craftsmanship.
