If they're counting on common courtesy to take the stress out of flying, I guess we can plan on a continued level of stress.
Bill your taller than me. I guess I will have to look up to you.

Yeah, the shoulder bit always get me. My gut doesn't help, but that's malleable and forms to the seat easily

I feel bad for the people next to me. Even with my hands in my lap, tucking in my elbows, I'm still rubbing shoulders with whoever was unlucky enough to be in the next seat.

Yeah, I'm also one of those guys that every person says, "Oh God no, please don't sit next to me!"

I'm in the same boat with the beer belly. I didn't intentionally gloss over that because, as you said, it's not hard to get that into the seat. It gives me something to rest my crossed arms on. I know I could stand to drop 40-50 lbs. I've got a 40" waist and my rear end just fits into the seat, but I've got a little bit to spare on the seat belt adjustment. I don't know how some folks are physically able to get their butts into the seat enough to buckle the seat belt, even with an extension.

Have things changed that much since the early 90's? Last time I was on that airport/rental car/hotel hamster wheel.

I wonder. How big are you people and can you really not function with seats reclined in front of you? Is it a body mass issue?

It is kinda sad to hear. I grew up on airplanes back in the early sixties and got to see the Golden Age. Flying was a luxury.
my Dad worked for American Airlines so i grew up flying in the 70's we flew stand-by so sometimes we would not get on airplanes and we would spend lots of time in airport terminals(Dallas-Ft Worth) but we almost always flew in first class (very nice in those days) and because my dad was an airline employee, we had to dress nice and if we saw someone on the plane in (gasp)shorts and or a tee shirt we were shocked :0

I recline my seat, but I also don't b*t*h if the person in front of me does.

I think I gotta be really horny today with bad eye site. I had to read that two times before I readjusted and I realized it didn't say pushing nude and inconsiderate to an extreme.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, 5'10" medium frame and can't get ever get fat with a high metabolism under my belt.

You're one of those guys that can just go in and just buy a suit off the rack, aren't you?

I was blessed with high metabolism until I was about 30. I apparently used it all up by then.

The most I have gained is 40 pounds, but from being ill for 2 years. My heaviest is about 180 after hitting the gym and extreme diets.

When it was first being sold, the makers of the Knee Defender stated that the devices were not illegal and that there were no regulations barring their use. Times have changed and apparently all major US carriers ban the device.

Personally, I have a body built for coach, all upper body and shorter than average legs. I also don't use a laptop on planes . . . that's for "worker bees" . . . I used to use my iPhone for movies, music and games, but now use an iPad which is still useful on a tray table even if the miscreant sitting in front decides they must recline.

Gentlemen,

If I can wander off the reservation for a moment, bare with me.

A few weeks ago I had a 3 month follow up with a neurosurgeon who did a three stage lumbar laminectomy on me. L2,3 & 4 to relieve some serious stenosis. I noticed in his office a number of thank you gifts and messages, some written obviously by children. I asked him what age group most of his patients were in. I figured it would be the old goats like me...in the 60-70 age range. Collapsed discs, yada yada...

Guess what? He said overweight people and those with difficult or strenuous jobs, both between 30 & 40. That really surprised me.
Just sayin.....
(FTR. I'm 6' 197lbs).

They're not illegal. There's no law banning them (the person wasn't arrested), but private companies can make their own conditions of use. Since the people didn't abide by them, they were escorted off the airline's property. No arrest was made.

Same as some restaurants won't serve you if you're not wearing a coat and tie.

??? You realized it didn't say "Pushing rude and inconsiderate to an extreme"??? But that's exactly what it says...

No, it's more like using any other prohibited device on an airplane. The ***********s who insist on staying on their cell phones at the gate, delaying departure so they can finish updating their fb status ("Yay, we're going to leave any minute now!!! SOOOO Excited!!!") are in the same category.

You're told no. If you insist on your preconceived notion of your rights to the point of requiring that you be ejected from the plane, then you clearly don't understand what living in a civilized society is all about.

Why is this so difficult for some people to grasp?

I really would love for the FAA to step in and regulate such nonsense. If the crew has to eject a passenger because they are this rude, inconsiderate and clueless, then they should be banned from commercial flights for a period of time, six months, a year, whatever. It's also something the crew could point out.

"MAAM, this is the second time you have been told to turn off your cell phone, once on the general announcement and now I am telling you personally. If you do not turn off your cell phone right now, we are going to return to the gate and you will be taken off of this airplane. If that happens, you will be left behind at this airport and you will be banned from commercial flights for the next (xxx) weeks/months/years. Once YOU have caused us to get out of line for takeoff so we can return to the gate, it is too late. You WILL be removed and banned."

And just substitute the recline blockers for the cell phone. Same exact principle.

Easy peasy.

Of course, the attendant may have to stop and may have to repeat parts of that to be sure it is communicated because the other passengers are going to be cheering pretty loudly.

And this will never be abused by some steward/stewardess who had a bad day. I don't like the idea of a punishment (even if just an economic out) without at least a hearing.

Question is, can an airline ban a passenger from using THEIR facilities? Same as (say) a banning someone from a restaurant or bar because they're a bad drunk and have raised a ruckus in the past.
