Low Tech - Hi Tech - we've come a long way!
Just starting learning about my new Toy - 1930 Chevy 3 window coupe with 6 cylinder engine. Boy have things changed! This car has an oil pressure of 5 pounds hot - drips oil onto the rocker arms that have felt inserts in them. The bottom end gets lubricated with a splash system and believe it or not - It never came with an oil filter as the oil pressure was too low to push it through one. Added to that - there are no front or rear engine seals - they never needed them because of the splash system. Then to be even more unbelieveable - the motor is bolted directly to the frame! - no motor mounts! Something else that is wild is the tranny - 5 gears - one main - 1 for reverse -and 3 forward - one for each gear! Now I look at my Mercedes - WOW - what a difference!
I have an old Chevy ad from 1933 where a long haul taxi driver in Texas states that he has 200,000 miles on his 1930 Chevy six without a major rebuild. The owner's manual states to use 30 weight oil for summer and to add 10% kerosene to dilute the oil for winter use. There is no thermostat in the cooling system - the suggested way to control temp. in cold weather was to put the "appropriate size cardboard in front of the rad" to keep the temp. up. Now we have computer designed cars - computer run cars - synthetic oils - etc etc. Have we come a long way or what????? By the way - the car starts instantly and runs great - all the way up to 45 mph!!!:p :p :p |

Now all you need is some bling, bling wheels. That would outdo even the most diehard ricer, hehe.

Better than that - it has whopping wide 3 3/4" tires - with inner tubes!

Congrats!
I hope you don't plan on rodding it.
It makes me cringe when I see a fine old car chopped,shaved,slammed,nosed,etc.,etc. I plan on getting to restoring my '40 Packard over the summer. Enyoy !!

You would not believe the number of people who tell me to rod it. NO WAY! This car was bought new in 1930 by the father of the guy I bought it from and it has been in their family since then. This poor fellow had money problems and had to sell it. Before his dad died he had the whole car restored except mechanical from 1988-1991 and in 1992 he had the motor and the rest of the mechanical restored. The car has only been driven in parades since then and had only 66 miles on the speedo when I got it. The speedo was reset to 0000 when the mechanical restoration was completed. It has a burgundy body with black fenders and I would rate it at 9.5 out of 10 - Why would anyone want to rod something like this???? Would make as much sense as putting a 350 Chev engine with turbo-hydromatic tranny in a 1958 190SL Mercedes - may be cool and go like a bat out of hell - but why??

I could'nt agree more!!
You are lucky it is in such good shape. Mine was the victim of an amateur restoration. The body is pretty soound, but it needs a repaint and interior. Regards,
