Here are the last of the pictures that came out. It was about 12:30 on a Thursday night when I finished getting everything in place so the rest of the pictures of the install didn't come out well. I'm going to crawl under there one night this week to check the torque on the driveshaft bolts and the transmission mounts and try to take some more.

(Being a bit lazy after some speed reading) But I've missed the transmission type you're fitting (as in 717.???)

I'm interested in seeing what goes with that shifter configuration you see...

It's a 717.411 I believe. It originally lived in an 86 300E before it was transplanted into my dearly departed 87 300E and on to the 91 300TE.

I drove the car to work the past two days and it drives wonderfully. I do have one issue I need to track down related to idle speed. On the 87 when the clutch was depressed the engine would go right to idle but the 91 will sometimes stall. I transferred the vacuum plug over that goes on the manifold where the transmission modulator line went. It may have a crack or leak so I'm going to source another.

I also developed a exhaust leak somewhere in the catalytic converter area. Not thrilled at the prospect of needing a new one of those.

It sounds like you just need to set the idle speed and make sure the micro-switch on the throttle linkage is hitting the right place. The engine did have to deal with a lump of metal full with fluid - now it just has a lump of metal!

I don't think there's another connection between the fuel injection system and the automatic transmission as well as the vacuum connection - but then again something in the back of my head sets an alarm bell ringing - might just be something I've misread in the FSM though! (If I stumble upon it again I'll post back)

Today I fixed the exhaust leak, the bolts holding the two sections hadn't been torqued enough when I had the exhaust out, and washed the car. I also decided to swap the wheels between the 400E and the 300TE since the TE had nearly new tires but seems to have an alignment issue and I don't want to chew up new rubber. I actually think I prefer this look on both cars.

Time to move house

There's no third door for the W123

Earlier this week I installed some re-painted headlight wiper delete panels since the ones there had begun peeling. I'm not sure if that was due to poor paint prep or the fact it started raining on me when I painted them last year. I also installed a new to me steering wheel since the leather stitching had come undone and was really bothering me.

I thought about selling the car for about 5 minutes but I like driving it too much.

Did a bit of cleaning under the hood yesterday. The distributor cover was missing when I got the car so I installed one from my parts stash and ran the plug wires correctly. I also cleaned the air cover and tried to wipe the valve cover down a bit.

It's nearly as much fun as driving the 400E but it has way more character. It did take a bit of time to get everything lined up properly and install the cover but the result is worth it.

Good project. If anyone is interested in replicating it, I have a 1986 5-speed parts car in south Anne Arundel Co., MD. I used this car to help resurrect my own, 1 owner '86 5 speed. All the manual transmission parts are there. Rolls but doesn't run or drive. Price negotiable.

I will be taking off the intake and throttle body for a megasquirting project.

How many miles on the car and did you get a chance to drive it before you began parting it? I highly doubt I'm going to get another W124 anytime soon but you never know
