I believe this is caused either by worn gears in the differential, or by a worn out axle shaft.

Good advice. I bought this car from a retired Air Force guy who moved up from Oklahoma. Car still had the valid Oklahoma plates on it when I bought it. It has never seen road salt. :)

A lot of people dismiss the 240D (in general) because the automatics are a bit slow. So if you see an ad for a 240D and it doesn't specify what type of transmission...
