The downside is that your pan gasket and filter will not be changed, which is part of servicing the trans on your car. Find a good indie shop and pay them to do it right.

What model car and year do you have?
Because fluid type is very important? Also the experience of the tech and the shop certification is crucial. Aamco like many franchise and chains will always deal with personnel problems? |

I've always changed my own fluid...so this is only what I hear...don't they actually force fluid through the system? This could be dangerous on a vehicle that's seen some fair amount of use being that debris could be dislodged and not fully flushed out...possibly causing tranny damage. And yes I believe the gasket and such aren't replaced which you should do on an MB when changing the fluid. Depending on your vehicle it shouldn't be a big deal to change it yourself and it wouldn't break the bank to pay a decent indie to do it for you. Best of luck

an independent mechanic. you'll find many mechanics specialize in a certain type of vehicle. some do bmw/mercedes some just any sort of import etc. try and find a good mercedes mechanic in your area. you can check the "good shop" section of this forum and see if your area is listed in there somewhere. the benefit of an indie lies in a usually substantial lower cost and depending on the mechanic a high skill level which will save time as well. not to mention many of the very good indie mechanics do it b/c they love the cars. of course there are some scummy indie mechanics so you'll want to keep an eye out. ask around in your area what other MB owners are doing for the service on their vehicles. best of luck

Those transmission fluid changers are nothing more than a tank with a membrane separating the old from the new. New fluid is put in one side and the trans cooler lines rerouted so that the old fluid is pumped into one side displacing new fluid into the pan. The transmission does the pumping part. See this as an example.. http://volvospeed.com/Repair/Transflush.php BTW, the writer is a Volvo Master Service Tech and he is really good. When my Volvos needed service, I took them to him. Now the ex has the Volvo and I still take the car to him.

Thanks Guys. I will just stick to the old fashion Fluid and filer change with pan removal and cleaning. There is so much hype about this stuff. I've heard many people do it to their cars with good results but I dont want to risk ruining my expensive mercedes

Since you're an enthusiast...you'd either have to get a GM or suddenly becomed misinformed to do the power purge...
I wouldn't even put one of my mopars through that...

PlayersSL:
You did not note what model Benz.. Ther are several camps "out there" in ref to transmission servicing>> camp 1 > maintains that MB tranny's are sealed for life >> so don't mess with them Camp 2 > Service the transmission >> but only at a real MB service center.. Camp 3 > service the tranny > use what you want to [different ATF products] Camp 4 > service the tranny > use only MB products > and try as best you can [given independant resource$$$] to do the same job as a MB service center. I subscribe to Camp 4 > do it myself and use MB product>> one thing is commonly agreed upon > proper tranny fluid level is critical to ensure long life to the tranny > not too much >> not too little http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/Trans7226Fluid |
