The other day, when I hit the gas, the engine backfired. Check engine light came on. Engine began to run rough, slight burning smell and there was aloss of power. I checked the gas cap and exhaust, everything seems to be OK. After I restartred, the engine smoothed out, smell gone, power is back, but the Check Engine light is still on. Is there any way to reset it without computer hook up or going back to the dealer..The next available appt. is 3 weeks away..Thanks.
Gary

Check the fuse on the overvoltage relay (OVP) behind the battery. The one with a red top. Just pull the relay straight up.

The 2000 model E55 can be reset with ODB2 scan tool. Disconnecting the battery will also reset the light!

I would not reset the light before retrieving the trouble code. As previously mentioned, the OVP relay fuse may be your problem, but you really need to know the trouble code before you lose it.

BTW, this trouble code can be retrieved with OBDII scanning equipment.

Good luck,
