I just recently bought a 1984 300 TurboDiesel. So far, I love it. Several things I need help with and an understanding of so I know how to proceed.

The transmission works pretty good on acceleration. On downshifting, there is a pronounced "clunk" between 1 of the downshift gear changes. It does not do it if you brake hard to stop.

There is a high pitched whine coming from the rear end. I changed the fluid to 85W 90 Synthetic Hypoid oil but I may not have put enough in... Also, I noticed that the right axle shaft has play in it back and forth between the brake assembly and where the splines go into the center carrier.

Also, there is just in the last couple of days a lot of creaking and groaning noises coming from the front suspension on both sides. Is that likely to be from ball joints, coil springs or the shock absorbers? It seems to be pronounced when I go over bumps or when I turn the wheels.

Lastly, the radio does not receive that many channels and the only way to tune it is with the auto search tune button. I cannot figure out how to manually search for stations... I love to listen to that engine but given the amount of driving I do, I am getting a bit bored! One other point on the radio. If I turn it on right as I am starting the vehicle, there is a popping noise at a regular intervals that stops if I turn off the radio and then turn it back on. What would cause the popping and how can I tune it manually?

Thank you for your reply!

John Harrison

My shop is an "authorized Becker" repair facility. As a result I don't know to much about the radios, they are all handled by experts and I am just an automobile tech. The popping is not right and probably is a bad contact or capacitor problem internally. One thing that might help in seeking a station is the "*" button. If you press the asterix button then you can type in the station number you want. (only works for stations you know the number to obviously). For station 93.7, press the "*" and then the "9", then the "3", then the "7".

There has been lots writen about adjusting the tranny and diagnosis. For a hard down shift as the vehicle comes to a stop, check the vacuum to the modulator. It should be at a maximum (at least 10-15 inches of vacuum) with ones foot off the accelerator.

The axle play in and out of the CV joints is probably OK. It means that there is enough wear that the activity can be felt. The action is normal for that type of CV joint but normally can't be felt. If you have vibrations under load I would look to that shaft.

Just about all the components you list can cause creaking. The best way to test is on a drive-on lift with turntables (front end rack). The wheels can then be turned with similar loading as on the street. If done on a hanging lift the joints are all in different angles than normal and under the wrong tention.

Steve,
Thank you for the reply. The car did not come with any of the original manuals so I have to figure it all out as I go. Do you think that the 85W 90 Hypoid Synthetic Oil mix is okay for the differential itself? The Haynes book I have says 90W but I can't see that making a huge difference but sometimes little things can make a huge difference.

Thank you!

Yes 85w90 should work fine. GL5 is the apropriate standard.

Steve, One other question. I bought the car to use for work. I travel long distances with it and figured that even though it is 16 years old, the diesel reliability would be far better than a gas vehicle with half the age and mileage. I think that as long as I keep the fuel filters, oil and filter, etc. clean and the cooling system in good working order, it should be a great work car. Which leads to my question: The cruise control works sometimes, other times it comes on and then surges, slows down, surges, etc. Other times it will just start gradually accelerating and not stop until I take action. The Haynes book does not address this area. What does this sound like to you?

Thanks again!
John

Sounds like a control unit. If you don't really need it I would forget the cruise control. The pieces are expensive and the system was prone to failures.

High pitch whine

John,

Sounds as though it's just wear on the differential. Our neighbors' 240D screams on the highway. I wouldn't much worry about replacing it unless it really bothers you. I've only ever seen one come apart and that was because of hard abuse (and it was on a 6.3). Any wonder?
