I have a slight trans problem on my 84 500 sel euro. If I start off with shift lever in "3" position, my trans will "stick" in first gear... have to let off gas or shift to drive to get it out of first. If I start off in "D" position, all is well and the trans will shift fine (as it really starts off in second gear in this position anyway). Is there a relativly easy fix to this problem or do I have to go inside the trans?
I did some preliminary checks and found that the wrong modulator had been installed by previous owner (was orange but should have been white) so I replaced it but aside from correcting the shift "harshness" it did nothing for this problem. I do not own trans pressure gages so I just adjusted the modulator by "feel". I hope I did not hurt the trans in any way. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated Matt |

The downshift to first in the "3" position is electrical. I forget how it was done but the fuel pump relays on those cars had the word kickdown and a rpm. It should disconnect the kickdown at a certain rpm.
I'll have to think about it some as you shouldn't have to get to that high in rpm to shift to second.

Well you definetly are on to something there Steve, I went out and drove the car again and found that 9 times out of 10 it WILL shift out of first at 3000 RPM with light accelerator pressure... hope this helps you help me!!!!
Thank you for your time and thoughts! Regards, Matt |

There is nothing wrong with your tranny. It is designed to start on 1st when the lever is on 3rd.

TommyMB,
I know it is supposed to start in first when "3" is selected... but it is also supposed to shift to second, then third!! Not stick in first. |
