Hmm, are you sure?? I've never heard of that... let's see what the techs have to say.

are you talking about the activated charcoal filter/canister for the evaporative loss emission control system? if so, they are inside the left hand rear wheelarch liner.

How and what is the point of changing this?!

I posted another question that is related. I ask for the location of the regeneration valve and on the cd, it is located beside the charcoal canister. It is indeed under the evaporation loss section. Unfortunately, it does not show at which part of the car it is located.

Could you include more details and possibly pictures. I have already spent days trying to locate it but no luck.

apprentice, you are right, that is what I was referring to. Could you please tell me exactly where it is. The reason I'm changing it is because of a smell my car gives when I run it for a long time.. Thanks

i think it is recommended to change the charcoal canister every 30k miles. my c220 has 95k miles on it and i have not changed it yet. anyway, have you looked inside the left-hand rear wheelarch liner yet? it has an inlet and an outlet pipe and an air inlet cap and it's mounted by a couple of bolts only. should be straight forward. hope this helps.
basically, the canister collect the fuel vapor from the fuel tank and then recycles it. the charcoal canister is only purged when the engine is under load so it won't supply an over rich mixture during idle.

Apprentice

I knew before it was somewhere at the rear left. Saw 2 pipes that run from the intake manifold to the rear left and the 2 goes into the body from underneath.
I do not quite understand you when you said "inside the left-hand rear wheelarch liner". Could you elaborate? and provide some details/steps to open up this area. Do I get to this area by taking out the rears seats or do I start from the bottom of the car?

dear all

i found the charcoal canister finally. for everybody's info, its located behind the front left wheel arch liner for w124, 220E.

To access it, jack up the car a bit so u have some clearance to work with. the are a couple of nuts and 1 screw, loosen it and the cover will come off. you will then see the canister, its pretty big.

i was having some idling problems before and the diagnostic scanner pointed out 3 faults, namely
1)air mass sensor (this is quite ex SGD275)
2)over voltage protectoin relay (SGD48)
3)regeneration valve (SGD 30)

the idling problem was more or less solved after the 1st 2 parts were replaced. but since it was just 30bucks, i thought i might was well chnage the valve.
The valve seems to be used to suck the petrol vapour out from the fuel tank. I do not know if this also contribute to my idling problems.
My idle is still not very good, especially when coming to a stop. It could be due to the idle actuator/slide but that is really expensive.
I think i got the wrong part and thats why I kept looking for it to no success. Its pretty obvious in the engine bay on the left side.

sorry about the wrong info! but the haynes manual said it is located inside the left rear wheelarch liner and it needs to be replaced every 30k miles! again from reading the haynes manual, your idling problem is probly not from the evaporative loss emission control system. the valve you are referring to is called the purge switchover valve in haynes manual. it is clipped to the bulkhead at the rear of the engine bay and connected to the activated charcoal canister via a pipe. its function is to allow fuel collected in the charcoal canister to be used when the engine is under load, eg. acceleration and it's controlled by a thermo valve, which prevents the purge valve from opening until the coolant temperature exceeds a preset limit. This is to ensure that the engine runs correctly when it is cold and to protect the catalytic converter from the effects of an over rich mixture. this mixture is too rich to be used during idle. well, second thought, it could be because the purge valve is faulty and letting all of these over rich fuel to enter the inlet manifold during idle and when engine is cold and cause it to idle roughly. or the thermo valve is faulty and causing the same thing. hope by changing the charcoal canister you can fix the idling problem. good luck

more news... i visted the agent today, unable to swallow the fact that i could not find this valve!
it turn out that on the microfiche, there is an expansion valve belonging to the w124 chassis, and another to the m111 engine(thats my engine). i was shocked! that means there is 2 regeneration valve in my car!

the one belonging to the m111 engine is the very visble and conspicuous one, somewhere behind the ABS pump. It has a 2 vacuum tubes connected to it and a 2 pin electrical connector with the word MOT on top of the connector.

the senior mech i talk to later then told me the first one that i bought was for engines using a different kind of fuel injection or vapour control system. said something about HRM and another term which i cannot recall now. I cant recall which one my car belongs to also. can any experts help me recall those terms?

in other words, i have to get the other valve that was right in front of me all this while.
bad news is this bugger now costs 100+ instead of 30! and i got an extra valve.

just FYI, the "faulty" valve i have now cannot hold a vacuum even when idling. Is this an indication of failure?
