air filters.
The Mercedes air filter for the 560SEC looks like the Hengst cheapy brand.
The picture seems to suggest what they look like. Might be different for the 500SEC but I doubt it, althought I never really saw one. I really don't think they are round like in some of the pictures, and like you'd expect to find on a 350 Chevy V8 or a Ford 302 V8 and the like. The air filter insert for the air pump, in the picture, is just a little thing, but so often overlooked. The Mann one for $9.00 is a no brainer - buy one, and put it in yourself. I even forgot to check it on mine: It has been so long. But I would bet you can see it if you take off the air cleaner cover, I think it sits inside there and you can just take it out and look at it. If the one in there looks filthy, just put it in a new one, and make note of the date and mileage when you did. Prolem over for at least $15,000-30,000 miles. I honestly don't know anything about radiator caps. How old is yours? Just get the right one for an '83 500 euro, and be done with it. Mine may have been replaced by the dealer at about 50,000 as part of the going through the Mercedes dealer gave it before selling it. It got a lot; (I have the work order) they replace collapsed motor mounts, leaking nitrogen air suspension cells, brake fluid flush, a full oil service and inspection, a new battery and alignment, front license bracket (PO ran it without front plates because he like the looks, brand new license plate for front came in the trunk of the car, obviously had never been mounted, as the US SEC bumpers look cleaner without a license plate or front bracket on them, like in advertisements), and some other work I can't remember. They tried to make the car as perfect as possible, and tried to ask TOP price for it, as it looked nice - I think about $42,000 for it - I don't know for sure. I guess they thought if they did everything to it, it would sell for a good price. They were wrong.........

to Los Angeles once on a vacation (used to go rather frequently, years ago) and they are better on the city streets. Up at 90 mph or so the cork is really out of the bottle, and they bounce up and down. They are only a 4 cylinder 112 hp engine, not meant for this. But the 560SEC is fine at 90 mph, the last time i did it my brother was in the car and couldn't believe the rpms so low on it at 90 mph. These SEC coupes just love to devour the macadam in long, effortless gulps. They are designed for the open road. Pack a suitcase, put the bird in his carrier, and take off!!!

choosing a radiator - W126
This thread is a good one for you to keep watching - about which brand of radiators to pick when you replace one.
Which Radiator Really, you learn something every day. Still, looks like Nissens or Behr are the best for these. With your low mileage, it's effectively a one time change (if you decide to do it) and viewed over the future projected lifetime of the car, probably well worth it..... My one worry about 560SEC is this: Some braindead teenager, driving some big SUV with blacked out windows and chatting or "texting" on a cell phone is going to bust my right of way and crash the SEC. Nothing you can do about it, but from what I see around here, it might just be a matter of time. Let's hope you and I and our cars can escape this fate!! Like it or not, there is a large emotional investment in these rides, and it would be a shame to lose them because someone was being stupid or inattentive or drunk ![]() (off podium now)..

Proper Coolant? The answer I waited for for 11 years!!!
Thank you Mercedesshop!!
Don't miss this. Zerex G-05 at Wal-mart! I kind of like this thread about the 500SEC Euro you started. Lots of knowledge goin' on. Kind of interesting for the next concerned first time buyer of W126, and especially for W126 euro buyers. Decent even if it gets locked. It might; it is bloody long. And CS is probably the #1 busiest poster in all of M. Shop, running about 20 posts a day. Now that is busy!!! LOL

How often it was said that the worst thing about these was that the wrong kind of people got to own them. That is so not true, in your case ![]() Get a few of the issues sorted.....and you will love driving this. It is a true GT car, it brings to life the true meaning and magic of Grand Touring. However, you do have a problem here.....that bird.....oooooh Do you have a pet bird or does the bird have a pet human? Don't worry, I am not asking!!! Let's just call it a "rhetorical" question, and let it go at that.....

Oh,
I think this thread is both informative & entertaining. Glad to see the Zerwz G5 is OK but since I guess if I have a B tech change it I'll use the MB If I need to pick some up formy own personal use to change it would seem if I found the Zerez easier & it was cheaper then I'd get that I'm a bit stoked I'm really thinking the engine running hot is just a guage problem but on;y a few drives will tell I'll watch the guage if it goes down suddenly then creeps up again most liekly its not the system Water can't lost 5 or 10 degrees at a light in a seond then gain it back again under acceleration & I've seen something like that/// Hey, thats not that bad just have to fix it Thanks again for all your help I have been learning so much Night... |

Radiator thread- German Star
Ron is the owner of German Star parts (Mercedesshop name is German Star)
and he clarified everything about the radiators - the Euro is different - and he has a Mercedes parts business. I'd definately consider shooting the your business to him. He is on Benzworld Off topic all the time, and he is a real good guy. I would trust him (though I haven't needed parts from anyone for years, and never bought anything from him. I'd definately trust him., Would give him a shot for my parts needs, even though I have not done so yet. I think you can click his signature link to get to his parts business website. This discussion has gone over 400 posts. Unbelievable. The unfortunate term common to internet forums "post whore" comes to mind. But it is all for the good (I hope)

It seems the additional radiator is a AC condenser so it would appear my car does not have a oil cooler. So I don't know it thats good or bad & if that means my Euro willl or will not need a special radiator Not getting a radiator yet but want to know just in case a shop tries to sell me the worng one At least if I have some knowledge I might be able to stop them from making amistake. I don't ecpect a rreg MB tech to know the Euro car especially if its different but then again I don't want them to mess up my car so I have to take the time & incentive to try to be as informed as I can.... |
