Jim,

It turns out that the 1993 500SL ETA and associated wiring bears little resemblance to what is on my 1992 500SL. The harnesses are different and my car does NOT even have a 32 pin diagnostic plug.

I was not trying to hijack the thread and troubleshoot a problem of my own.

I only wanted to be prepared and learn what scanner options I had in order to be prepared for what seems to be an inevitable problem waiting for me sometime in the future. I was thinking such a scanner might also be useful to salsaia as well. Arthur pointed out that the codes can be read without a scanner which is good to know.

My comments were indeed off-base. They were not applicable for this car.
Thank you for pointing out my error so delicately.

SALSAIA,

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Listen to what Jim and Arthur say. You have their attention and they are both very knowledgeable in this area.

Whunter has posted some links for further reading. There are lots of things to read there, but don't be confused by the posts that refer to disabling ASR. The procedures in those posts don't bypass your failing ETA, but describe ways to overide the ASR's intervention when a wheel breaks traction.

I've been to Jupiter many times and love the area, but don't know of any shop nearby.

Good Luck!

But you do have a 16 pin connector from which to read fault codes, with essentially the same blink code reader, although the CIS diagnostic system is less advanced than the LH motors of 1993 SLs. Indeed disabling ASR does not rid one of all ASR / limp home mode problems. It seems that many people confuse the two concepts.

I am going to build the radio shack tool but I still have one question. How do you get the error code from the led light?

The procedure for using the reader is described in MENU#2 entitled "DTC Readout". This talks about the "38 Pin Diag Connector" so just sub your 16 pin connector.

To ERASE the codes follow the procedure in "Erasing DTC memory".

Count the blinks and use AD's link in post#11. If that's confusing, let us know what they are.

No, No, salsaia has the 38 pin connector on his '93. Your menu is just what he needs!

I'm sorry I confused this thread thinking his '93 SL was like my 16 pin '92.
I'm NOT having a problem with my ASR... Was only trying to help.

Does this device work? (Thread does not say what it is is or how to get one.)

To shut down the ASR -- without putting the car into permanent limp mode.
When I had ASR issues, I was impressed by the power the car had for those first few moments after restarting, before ASR had a chance to re-engage.

I first noticed it, in a dramatic way, when I had one of the neutral safety switch/ASR issues I wrote of in other threads. I restarted the car at a red light and, when it turned green, tapped the accelerater as usual, and the car took off like a rocket. (Good thing there where no nuns or small children in the intersection -- or a police cruiser behind me.)

I am convinced ASR is a throw-back to Germany's Nazi days, with the fascist little computer gleefully deciding how, and when, to allocate the torque we paid good money for.

They had all the ABS hardware there anyway, so it was an easily added feature...that turned out to be a PIA....witha CHAIN SWITCH to boot...gotta love that.

" Let's see now , where did I put my CHAINS ???.. they gotta be 'round here somewhere...... Weather guy says we are gonna need them tonite"

If you live in CHAIN country, you also own a 4 wheel drive vehicle....... simple.

#33 is{ asr only can communication faulty in general.}
What do I do now?

I also get 13 blinks
asr/ets hydrauic unit,left front axel selonoid valve[hold]
Where is this and how do I test it.

Sal

I think I found the sending unit on the left front axel but it doesn't look like a selonoid valve!!:

Don't forget the second part ". . . or actual value potentiometer (M16/4r1 or M16/4r2) or actuator motor (M16/4m1)or magnetic clutch (M16/4k1)". Refers to ETA . .

That's probably the more plausible fault. . .
