Red face minor 300E problems

I'm usually not one to complain about little nicky nacky problems, espcially since I bought the car for next to nothing (87 300E 160K $2K). The car is in stellar condition, even gave it my own tune up, replaced the plugs (suppers as recommended), mgncr wires etc. The only problem the car seems to have is that a few of the electronic windows wont roll down, and the drivers side window moves slow when rolling up. Is this a common prob. with these cars? And if so, what is usually the culprit? Bad switch, bad motor on the window? And if a back window works, and the front pas side doesn't, can I take the motor from one to the other? Thanks in advance for the feed back.

Mateo, MZB newbie, formerly a BMW owner.

This is what I would do...

1. purchase and install all new fuses to be sure they are all good and making proper contact.

2. search the site for window switch, window regulator, etc.

3. if you have a multimeter, you can do testing of the switches and window regulators. Check the DIY Section for help in removing panels, and other items. Especially the w124 Stereo article and the door check strap article for how to get the panels off to test the inside window mechanicals.

4. if all else fails, check the good mb shops forum section and see if there is a shop in your area that is highly recommended.

5.Check fastlane/partsshop here once you have determined the problem for all your parts needs. And call phil up at partsshop, number is found on banner here, he will help you get what you need and always works to make sure you get the right parts.

6. Read lee's detailing faq, and give the car a thourough detail and keep doing it often, you will love the results.

7. If you want to upgrade the wheels, click the tirerack banner, go to the upgrade garage, and check out what wheels you can put on your car!

8. if you want to lower it or firm up the ride, search for sportline, and read the article on the cars tab.

9. Enjoy your benz, change the oil hot and change it often, and change the filter with the oil at 3000 mile intervals or whatever you feel comfortable with.

Congrats on the purchase!

Alon

thanks

thanks for the insite. I've checked the fuses, but I'm going to take your advice and check the window regulators and switches with a multimeter. Thanks again.

I can attest to 300E window regulators, but it is usually the rears that go bad...I have posted this in other threads, but to give you a heads up...

...the plastic track slider that is attached to the cable eventually self-destructs with age, and it will do so only after you engage the window switch. Eventually, you will notice that the window will not go up (or down) at all, which is an indication that the cable has now gotten snarled up. I have lost both of my rear units within a year of each other...

The plastic piece is replaceable (about $2) and removing the door panels is pretty simple (I've removed all four of mine and reinstalled in about an hour). A complete rear assembly goes for about $140, and as badly messed up as the cables were on mine, I just went ahead and got new units. Install is also a DIY, and can be done in a casual evening in about 1-2 hours...the only hassle is that the metal components and the door shells have many sharp edges, so wear hand protection if you have any.
