W210: Brake Rotor Removal?
I am changing front brake pads and rotors on a 1996 E320 (W210). The caliber is a single piston design so it is necessary to remove the caliber prior to pad removal and I have done so and the old pads are out. I also removed the disk set screw so I think the rotor should be ready for release, but the rotor is of a different opinion. I have gently used a hammer to communicate my perspective on this matter, but the rotor is obstinate.
Usually, I work off a manual, but none is reasonably available for this vehicle. Am I missing a step required to release the rotor? Also, If I eventually succeed, on reassembly should I lightly coat the interior circumference of the new rotor with antiseize to facilitate future removal? As a side comment, the Balo rotors I bought through FastLane are gorgeous. |

Did you also remove that metal bracket that goes around the rotor where the caliper is? It is probably held on by two 17 or 19 mm bolts from the back. If all this is removed, the rotor should come off.
-Good luck

Penetrating oil fixed the stuck rotor problem. Yes, it was necessary to remove the caliber carrier that is held by two 19mm bolts. I needed a breaker bar to loosen the bolts
The second wheel was lots easier. I applied penetrating oil to the rotor's mating circumference and removed the caliber carrier first. This proved good access to the rotor and, after removal of the disk set screw, the rotor came off with one good whack from the hammer. An acquaintance from work tells me that he just paid more than $700 for a dealer to replace rear pads and rotors on a MY 2000 C230. I feel pretty good. |
