Question 560 SEC Spring Conversion Possible???

The Hydraulic suspension on the SEC is due for a rebuild but before I do I was just wondering if any of you had heard about a conversion to regular springs/shocks that is available for a 126. I know that on my old Range Rover they sell a conversion kit that lets you replace the air lift with regular hard springs/shocks. Is there such a kit for an SEC?? If there is a kit is there a performance kit? Anyway, I think that I am probably just dreaming but I was curious if any of you had heard of such a thing. Thanks in advance for any response. F Grey

I've never heard of a kit but everything you need might be under a 420SEL or even a 380SEC if those weren't equipped with leveling suspension.

I think all 560's have self levelling but on the 500's it was optional. The only main difference between a 500 and a 560 was the motor, all the rest of the components are the same so you should be able to use 500SEL springs and shocks in the rear. You will need to either disconnect/remove the pump or loop the fluid lines near the diff so that the fluid returns back to the pump.

Matt.

I converted my euro 500SE from a hydraulic suspension to conventional set up when the neumatic shocks began to leak. I purchased two metric caps and simply capped the air cells where the rubber hose connects. Everything but the shocks and springs were left intact in the event someone else desired to convert back to original set up. I purchased two springs at a salvage yard for $60. Make sure you get the right part number for your vehicle. It is stamped on the bottom edge of the spring. Also, the springs are color coded. Make sure you get a matched set if they are used. Best to have a MB mechanic install the springs since a special compressor is required. Other spring compressors will not work so don't waste your time. Hope this helps.

Might it be worth locking the leveling valve in a neutral or high position so the hydraulic system isn't trying to pump the heck out of the spheres?

Yes, a few people at mbcoupes.com have converted to conventional springs. Search their archives and post any questions you may have on their BBS.

It is either Bekkers, or Performance Products (don't remember which)that sells a plate to cover where the hydrualic pump was once you remove it. You can just lock the leveling valve and plug the ends of the hydrualic lines if you want to convert back some day. Cheers, Andrew Seidel.
