91 300 SEL leaks

I will try to make this short as it is a 2 question post-
1. Engine leaks from passenger side between head and crankcase. I think it is a bad head gasket, but no running problems, just a qt. every 500 miles.....

2. transmission leaks- I replaced the pan gasket and used a torque wrench, so I think thats ok, The inside of the bellhousing is dry, but there is a distinct drip at the bottom of the bell housing(maybe where it accumulates) The dipstick o-ring is not leaking, and I took the metal hose out, and it did not seem to leak. What am I missing? Both leaks are DEFINITELY from the passenger side, and they are irritating me, as I never had a leak in the first two years..... I am a 15 yr diy'er, and have been under the car 3 times looking for the leak, and no luck any suggestions????

The valve job should be done on the head with the gasket replaecment. To leak out the amount of oil you are talking about would be a stretch. You are most likely burning a great deal of it through the enigne.

The front pump may be leaking in the tranny.

Thank you, and where is the pump located, and is it easy to get to? (r&r?) Can I do it with the tranny in place?

The tranny has to come out, so while you are in there, replace the rear seal too, and maybe the rear main engine seal as the tranny would have to be removed for that too. That will save/cost $600.

I'd suggest you let a dealer or experienced tech who really understands MB transmissions.

I would ask when was the last time the valve cover seal was replaced. A bad one will leak like a sieve, but not 1 qt/500 miles, maybe 1 qt/1k is possible. They can leak bad enough to produce oil vapors at stop lights and a steady burning oil smell.
