Mb Dealer Prices Are A Joke! Parts For Sale!

Man oh man did my buddy's friend get the bad end of this stick...Here's the story: My coworker who has a 560 SEC has another guy with a 560 SEL like mine who wants me to tune it up for him this weekend (we've been talking about it for about the last week or so getting schedules together, etc) and I told him to just get the parts from HERE at the partsshop (or the like) but of course he couldn't listen to me (I'll tell you guys about that in a second).

I said I could either get them for him from one of my contacts here in town (which has prices close to partsshop just local--he sometimes gives me parts at his cost because of the business I get him and hell, he probably uses the partsshop too!) or he could do it. Needless to say, I went ahead and purchased the stuff and I am now in possession of all parts needed to do his car. He just visited me and my coworker here at the office for lunch and was bringing me the parts he bought. This dude couldn't wait to get his stuff in the mail so... guess what he did??? He doesn't understand the cardinal rule: DON'T BUY PARTS FROM THE DEALER! This is what he's got for a whopping $500 plus bucks! Feel free to call for these prices if you doubt it (Atlanta Classic Mercedes parts 404-296-9662)

Bosch wire set...$158.00
Bosch cap... $232.20!!!!!
Bosch rotor...$61.25!!!
8 Bosch W9DC plugs...$5.60 ea=$44.80

Totaling 496.25 before taxes!

Hell even with BERU wires, its only about $317.00 total from fastlane with shipping and taxes!

I've got the same setup EXCEPT I've got new BERU wires. I told him I'd install the Beru's but he insists on the Bosch because the dealer told him they were the best. SOOOOO, I'm gonna be putting this little setup I've got up for sale to anyone interested for UNDER $300 ...I only paid $292.00 which was a really good deal and don't mind passing it on to anyone wanting this setup.I may even be able to ship from the job helping out with the shipping charges. Its not a big deal if no one wants it because I can take em back although I don't want to considering I got it at cost. Anyway, guys use the partsshop or the like when you need parts because as you can see, the markup is wild!

I pay a buck apiece for Bosch W9DC plugs at the local partshouse. Can't imagine paying almost $6 each. He did get a steal on the Bosch wire set though, the closest stealer wanted $197 for the same set when I was wire shopping (I passed).

BTW: Hi Alan

Hey Mike old buddy!

How's the 560 holding up? My baby's still tempermental with the fluctuating temps but I think its the radiator and will be replacing the Nissens I got last year with a new Behr I picked up at a steal. Good to hear from ya... Oh, I don't know if you know of any interested parties (or yourself) but I just got an extra set of NEW euro headlights coming in through customs in two weeks and will be putting those suckers on Ebay unless someone wants them here for their 126.

Since you're the ultimate "560 man", what do you think about putting bendix pads up front (was gonna go with jared but I was given the bendix and figure what the heck, they make some pretty good calipers sooo.)?? Just wanted your opinion. Also, I was gonna do the timing chain and the question I have is this: It was done at a bit over 150k and it now has 221k on her. Although it was done at 150k THAT was in 1995! Waddaya think?

Alan,

That's only 71K in 7 years, I wouldn't worry about the chain for another 29K. What I would do though is invest in a set of new valve cover seals and open up the top and check out the upper rails. Amber color is still OK, dark amber or getting beer bottle brown then I'd replace the upper rails.

I see nothing wrong with trying the Bendix pads, but they might moan a little (they did on the 4.5).

What brand of euro lights are coming in? I am considering that upgrade, but not sure when. I might be interested.

Mike, since he says the euro lights are coming in through customs, maybe they're coming in from Europe.

I'm telling ya Mike, you gotta get the euro's. I've got my new Bosch euro's on, and you know they not only improve the look of the car, but man do they put out a lotta light.

Living in Temecula and all the country roads, you're gonna love'em.

My mom lives out in Temecula in the hills amongst the vineyards. At night, there's aren't really any street lamps, and the euro's make it seem like daylight.

Hey, be sure to bring the 560. We've already seen the 4.5, and I've been reading about the 560 for so long, I can't stand not seeing it yet.

420, I can probably let the set go for about $152.00 even (that is just my total minus what I paid for the wires-not even including tax) so just let me know if you're interested. Mike, the euros are DEPO headlights and are up to par with Bosch and Hella.I think or rather I'm sure that one of the moderators here (ASHMAN) has them on his MB and I've seen them on my neighbor's 124. I only trusted his advice because he is european and that's one of the top brands they use there on their vehicles. It has the vac adjustments and everything and are soooo cool looking I can't wait until mine get here from Europe.

Oh, Mike I finally installed the new Behr radiator last night and refilled her with a gallon of MB coolant/water mix...that sound about right?? So far the temps are right on the money (80-82 steady) and when I took her on the test drive she purred like a kitten again...I also plan on changing the plugs, cap and rotor this weekend although her throttle responded just fine last night.

I'm confident this is the end of the high temps for now but since it wasn't much traffic this morning, the real test will be this afternoon's rush hour in 90+ weather with the a/c on standing still. She'll be alright though. Anyway, thanks for the advice about the bendix because I didn't put them on last night until I was able to see the verdict about the pads.

Alan, one gallon of coolant and the rest water should give you just about a 45/55 ratio. That's just where you want it. Hopefully your ride home will provide the answer everyone's been waiting for .

Depo's are good according to everything I've read, and if all goes well I will be able to see some in person this Saturday (on Ashman's car). My main concern is that I want glass lenes, not plastic.

Thanks and I'll keep you posted Mike...These euros are 100% GLASS! I agree with your concern because I don't want the plastic stuff either but the ones that I'm gonna get are definately glass. I even ended up getting 3 sets of em so once you get a look at Ashman's, let me know what ya think! His should also be glass though (did he say his were plastic?) I would hope his were glass too but who knows?

The DEPO lenses are glass. FWIW, the DEPO's look exactly like Bosch or Hella. I don't know how anyone could tell the apart if the name wasn't stamped on them.
They are substantial and heavy.

Click on Ashman's thread about the So. Cal euro installation gtg. He took many pictures of the euro's on and off the car.

Mushedroom also bought a set of DEPO's and he may have taken photo's, too.
