How to fix 'E&S' switch in E320 auto tranny??

Hi Gang,
I have a 1995 E320with 104 engine. The Economic & Sport mode selector switch is not working. Later I found out that the vacum lines and the control valve for this function (near the battery) is removed. Question : Why would anybody do this? And how hard is it to reconnect this valve and vacum lines? Does anybody have the schematic diagram on this?
I really appreciate any advice, because I'd really like to enjoy the 'S' ride on that car.
Thank You.

S is for standard, not sport. The system defaults to S mode, economy is selected by applying vacuum to the red line that goes to the transmission. Common fault is the switch itself.

The only reason I can think of removing parts is to stop the delayed cold start upshift 'feature' which is intended to promote rapid heating of the catalytic convertor but causes rough shifting when cold. This uses green vacuum lines. Could it be that the wrong system has been removed?

Thank You for replying Mick J,
At this moment I can only see two vacuum lines. One is white and the other is purple (or pink)?, I don't see the green vacuum line. Maybe the green vacuum line is also removed.
So, if I understand you correctly :
1. The E/S switch is connected to the green line going to the valve (near the battery)
2. From the valve there are two lines going out. The purple line going to the tranny and the white one going to the vacuum source.
Is that how basically those lines connected?
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, I saw a wye vacuum hose connection laying around, near the battery compartment. Where is it supposedly connected to?
Thank You for you kind replies.
Bye

This is how it is on mine. This is a 4 cylinder so the manifold is different, also it is a UK right hand drive with battery on the left side of the car and brake booster on the right.

There is a white line from the big square part of the inlet manifold by the throttle housing which leads under the heater intake to the right side of the car and a Y piece behind the brake booster. One branch goes to a yellow plastic barrel (1 way valve?) then 3 black lines go off to headlamp levelling and the 2 transmission solenoid valves. The cold start delay one is close by and connects to the green transmission line which passes back under the heater housing to the left side. The E/S valve is on the left side of the car near the strut and connects to the red transmission line.

The white transmission line goes to the inlet manifold close to the cylinder head.

The only purple lines are headlamp levelling.

Email me for pics, I will check the colours of the wires.

I would have thought the E/S switch would be electrically operated like my W126 and not vacuum. Have you actually pulled the centre console and had a look at the switch?

With my switch disconnected the trans defaults to S.

Matt.

Switch is electric, transmission control is vacuum, hence the solenoid valve.

Hi again Mick J,
here in Indonesia, the cars are right hand drive (similar to UK), so You don't have to think like in the mirror (a good coincidence).
I checked again, there are two vacuum lines.
1. One is white, it is still connected to something below. I will check where it from, and where it goes to next time.
2. Purple vacuum line (yes it is purple, don't know why)
it is stopped (not connected to anything)
(picture 1, see where I point to).
Hope the picture is attached successfully. Here goes

And also I found one electrical socket, which is missing the solenoid valve. It is at the front of the shockabsorber mounting. i assume it is connected to the E/S switch at the center console (haven't remove the center console panel, tnx Mattman).
I will check the connection between the two cable.
See picture 2..... . I have to appologize about the late response because of the time difference and because I have to borrow the digital camera. Thank you for your reply Mick J.

I also have to check if the purple vacuum line is the same as the one behind the brake booster. (Picture 3). I guess blowing the vacuum line is the easiest way to check connection. I will do that too. So, correct me if I'm wrong, the switch is connected electrically to the solenoid valve, and from the valve there are two vacuum lines going out. One goes to the transmission, and one from the vacuum source which is the wye connection behind the brake booster. Still don't find the cold start delay. But I will check again.

Well it looks like someone has ripped out a load of stuff!

The purple line in pic 1 will be part of the headlamp levelling and should run from the dash to the left side lamp.

Pic 2 shows where the E/S solenoid should be, on my car the wires in that connector are brown and black with purple tracer. The black/purple one should go live with the ignition switched on and the E/S switch set to E and stay dead when S selected

The cold start upshift delay solenoid should be just to the right of the yellow valves in pic 3 with a black line from the yellow non return valve and a green line to the transmission - looks like that's missing too.

For diagram and pics email me through the board.

My guess is that someone removed this lot to disable the highly irritating cold start upshift delay feature, but didn't know what they were doing and went too far!
