I am considering adjusting the valve clearance on my newly acquired '85 300D and am wondering what the best procedure is and what special tools are necessary. Also, if I send this task out to a tech, what should the price be and how long should it take a pro tech. Lastly, I read in a past post that the clearances are .10mm on the exhaust and .35 on the intake--is this correct? Thank You.

You have the right values but on the wrong valves. Intake = 0.010" Exhaust = 0.035". This is for a cold motor, it should not have run in 4-5 hours. They give a Hot spec that adds 0.005" to each value, but its best done cold.
The adjustment is two 14mm nuts screwed to the top of the valve. The upper nut is what the rocker arm pushes on. By turning the nuts counter-clockwise the effective length of the valve grows. Clockwise movement produces the opposite effect. The jam (bottom) nut is rather thin and accessing these two is rather difficult without the special curved thin wrenches MB# 615 589 00 10 00. We charge an hour labor to adjust the valves and also charge for a new V/C gasket. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician [This message has been edited by stevebfl (edited 03-28-2000).] |

zachv,
I have managed to do the valves on these engines without the curved wrenches, but it is total murder. It also may cause you to compromise on a setting because it may so difficult to do it one more time to get it more precise. The wrenches are a good investment if you are planning on driving this car for any length of time at all. With the curved wrenches, it will be much easier to fuss with each valve until you have precisely the correct setting. They are about $60.00 and probably available from PeachParts.com. Buy these wrenches and do the job yourself once, and you've paid for the wrenches. Stevebl had the right numbers for intake and exhaust but the wrong system. He gave you inch dimensions when it should have been metric.
Correct values are: Intake: 0.10mm 0.004in cold Exhaust: 0.35mm 0.014in cold I just did a valve adjustment yesterday. It is not hard but tedious because I don't have the special wrenches. I use a .003in and .005 gage (go nogo) for intake and .013in and .015in gage for exhaust. |

How much do the wrenches cost?

You can get the current prices by entering the part numbers listed above into the search engine in the PartsShop Lobby.
Since we have been adjusting prices a lot lately I would rather have you look up the current price rather than me quoting one in this message. If I put the price in this message someone might read it a year from now and wonder why the price has changed. ------------------ Bill Wood - Webmaster MercedesShop.com, LLC |
