My mom travels alot for work and she is tired of the big overheating v-8 in the 1987 560sel. I have been looking at a c220 or something in the 4cyl. or small 6cyl. will these engines run as long as the old v-8s and can the take every day driving. also what kind of gas milage do they get.

My wife loves her '95 C220, which we bought last December upon the demise of our beloved 300D. It had 42K on the clock then and just went over 50K. It is used mainly for her commute to DC and gets 20+ MPG.

We have had zero problems with it since getting the ABS straightened out under the Starmark warranty.

My only complaint is that the engine is not very smooth - "buzzy" is how I would describe it. It has a quick first gear and a less than gentle shift. It also needs about 3300 RPM for 70 mph, so that is a bit loud.

Fit and finish are first-class, if a little plain.

Chuck

I test drove a couple of the c220 and I agree about the buzzy engine. The c220 is much better than my old 190e 2.3 though. I also drove a c280 and enjoyed the 6 cyl. smoothness and power over the 4 cyl. Prices seem to be a few thou. less on the 4 while the 6 holds more value. If I had to chose between a low mile c220 and a higher mile c280 for the same money I would have to go with the c280. Check for service history of course! I sold my 91' 190e 2.3 with 69k for way less than what 190e 2.6 sell for! I can't wait for the new c240 to come out this fall! I already have my deposit down for one!
My God! Eight airbags!

Our 1995 C280 is a great car. Driving it reminds me of a 300E (anybody else notice that?). The M104 has good power, sounds wonderful and we get about 20mpg in town and 25mpg on the highway. Watch out for the usual M104 problems like oil leaks from the head & timing cover gaskets and heat damaged engine wiring harnesses.

Hi Benzman;

I've had a 94 C220 for 31/2 years and have had nothing but good experience with it. It's been trouble free, and only been in the shop for sched. maintenance. For a four banger it's pretty peppy- esp with 5 people in the car and 2 weeks worth of luggage in the trunk. Gas milage is good(I get around 650km to a tankful on the highway, 500km in the city). Although the engine is a bit "buzzy", I find it less so than most 4 bangers, and have never found it intrusive in the cabin.
Personally, after 3 1/2 years I still get the same thrill out of the car as I did when I first got it(my wife says I like the car more than her )

If the fluids are changed and the car is maintained, I would say yes, but then again, thats my opinion- based on my experience with my car. Up here, we don't see many for sale, and the ones that are, typically have low miles.

Based on EPA tests, I think that the C220 gets better gas mileage, however, as to which one would last longer, thats a toss up. The model is too new to really have any idea.
The best bet would be to compare longevity of he 190E 2.3 and the 190E 2.6 or get some input from a tech who has worked on the C220's and can comment on the build quality in relation to older Benzes.
