Does anyone have an oil pan centering sleeve (part no. 617589001400)?

I found one online here for $68.80 but I don't know anything about the online store as far as reliability. The price is OK and I'd buy it and make it available to other members if nobody has one already.

The tool slides on the crank shaft and helps maintain alignment of the piece circled in green during installation.

I decided to order the tool and make it available to others after I use it.

The tool arrived today. It ended up costing $107 shipped. The list price on their website was wrong, but I still decided to go ahead with the order since I needed it.

Shipping was fast and it's a genuine MB tool.

Once I finish up a few other projects on the wagon, I'll get some pics of the tool in use.

Nice one - it isn't needed on a non turbo OM617 - but still interested to see it.

Do you think (with dimensions) it could be made on a lathe with a bit of Delrin?

Absolutely. I'll post pics of the tool with I.D and O.D. dimensions.

You could probably align the piece by hand, but I was thinking once the sealant is in there it would be tough to keep it from sliding around since the holes are larger than the bolts to allow for some adjustment.

My piece was off several mm to the right and I didn't want to risk having to do the front seal again if I didn't get the alignment correct.

This tool stays in place until the sealant is cured and then gets removed.

EDIT: What's different on the NA OM617? Does it have a different type of front seal?

I looked in the manual and it looks like the block forms the top half of the bore for the radial seal on NA OM617's.

EDIT: The tool may still be needed if you are reinstalling the upper oil pan to the block.

Thanks for the offer of data and the pictures. When I refitted my upper oil pan (on a non turbo OM617) found it quite easy to align it but then it didn't have this extra cover bit you've got...

...actually I've just had a penny dropping moment - now I can see why not so many people have trouble removing the spacer that sits behind the front seal (crankshaft).

Now of course you've got to fit the crankshaft seal and the balancer etc...

...have you by any chance got the fly wheel lock?

Would this be needed while torquing the crank bolt back on? I was planning to put a large pry bar in the notch of the balancer and hold it against the block.

Wow Chad brilliant set of pictures and a great diagram.

As for the fly wheel lock I reckon you are better off trying ye olde thingy stuck in the starter hole rather than wedging something at the front of the engine to torque up the 27mm hex head bolt that goes into the crank (phew try saying that in one go! Why don't I ever use commas?)...

I've been trying to come up with a suitable DIY alternative to the fly wheel lock special tool here =>

Has anyone ever made a good DIY tool to lock an OM617 flywheel?

If you come up with something - I for one would like to know about it!

The anaerobic sealant and activator arrived today so I was able to get the upper oil pan bracket installed.

Here's the alignment sleeve tool in use.

Once everything was torqued down, I tapped the side of the sleeve tool with a plastic tip hammer as I pulled it off.

Here's an idea... can the crank housing cover be removed with the front crank seal in place, then new sealant put on the sealing surfaces of the cover, bolt it back in place (the crank seal acts as the centering tool), then after the sealant cures, pull and replace the seal if necessary? Isn't the Mercedes sealant the same thing as black RTV?
