116 From Hell - Final Chapter???

The other thread was starting to get pretty long so hopefully this will be the final chapter of this tome.

This morning I pulled the l/h side fuel injectors, replaced two, and replaced the hose on all. I started it up and this is about the best it has ran since I started in on this monster about 4 months ago!

I tore apart and cleaned the fuel gauge sender unit so it now looks like the fuel gauge is working. I'll think about borrowing my neighbor's vacuum pump and evacuate the AC and see if it'll hold a vacuum and, if so, I'll toss a couple cans of R12 in it and see what happens.

I feel with a few more odds-and-ends, a r/h side tierod, and a new set of tires this thing is about as ready for the road as it's gonna get. Still need to scrounge a vacuum advance/retard unit for the distributor as I don't think it is functional.

The engine still has a slight miss at idle but y'all have assured me that getting this thing out on the road will do wonders for it's disposition.

I appreciate all of the people on this forum that have kept me pointed in the right direction, without your valuable insight and suggestions I'd probably gotten pissed a long time ago and torched it!

Justin B.

Justin, where are you? I've been reading your posts every day and silently cheering you on, and I'm sure many others are as well. Is it on the road yet?

Bowser, backyard mechanic law says hobbyists always gain from their endeavors in ways few others can appreciate...... yet motorheads know each other on sight - speaking the same language and trading insights irregardless of whatever car they work on.

You've written the book on 450SE mechanical restoration!!

Git yer car on longhaul travel/trip and you can expect treatment as royalty wherever you go - comparing notes with other do-it-yourself mechanics.... and even putting others to shame with what you've done!

A/C work amounts to advanced degree stuff.... just keep flushing the system is what I've heard.

Rick, I'm by Ft. Worth, TX. It's not on the road yet but as soon as I figure some finances out it may be within a month, maybe...

Dog, thanks for the kudos. I feel like I have been tied up and dragged through a blackberry patch, BY this car! I can honestly say that if I knew what I was going to be in for I probably would have gagged my wife and locked her in a closet as soon as I heard her ask her brother if he would sell it to her! The only thing that kept me going was not wanting it to beat me! But, there are still issues that need addressed but hopefully they can wait as this is just going to be a "back and forth to work car" for the wife and it will be just used around town, for now...

Gonna take a holiday from it right now as my Brick needs some attention. I think it's jealous. The OD is acting up and the AC compressor sounds like it's trying to crawl out from under the hood and won't hold a charge. Makes me glad it's been converted to R134!

Justin

Well, I meant "where are you" in a more figurative sense as you had not written anything in a couple days. I guess I'll just have to find a new passtime.

I guess I've taken enough of a break from the Monster, fixed the AC in my Brick, and changed oil on the fleet. Being bored, today I decided to try out the Bosch test set I got a couple weeks ago.

I printed out the testing procedures from the on-line MB Service Manual, grabbed the tester, and went outside and snuck up on the sleeping beast.

After unplugging the computer and hooking up the test set it took about 10 minutes to run all the tests. Everything passed fine except Voltage 1&2 tests (computer voltage supply) was at 10v and the low limit in the book specified 11v. Chart indicated that I should clean some connections and check main relay.

The tester does have some glitches I will need to look into, though. The meter needle "drags" unless unit is placed flat on it's back and one of the injector test pushbuttons seems to be inop. Other than that it seemed to work fine.

My list of "things to do" is now down to these items:

Drain tank (again) and pull and clean in-tank fuel strainer/screen.

Replace r/h tierod assy.

Sandblast and repaint rims.

Buy new tires.

Evacuate and recharge AC.

Wife needs to get motivated and redo the back seats.

I now have all lights working, wipers, horn, and other safety related items functioning so as soon as I win the lottery I'll be able to afford to put it on the road.

That's my update for now...

Anybody want a 450SE - Cheap!?

I got a spurt of motivation today so I "made" a socket to remove the gas tank fuel strainer assembly. Went to the cheapo tool store and bought a 1 7/8" end wrench, cut the boxed end off, ground it down, welded a chunk of steering column tube (from 86 Olds) to it and I had a socket!

To make a real long story only long, I got the strainer out, cleaned it with B-12 (totally varnished closed) and reinstalled. I was really feeling good right about then and it started right up and ran pretty decent, then it started smoking and smelling real rich. Crap!

I revved it a little to clean it out and really fogged the backyard so I let it return to an idle. It idled for a few seconds then quit. I cranked it and it made about one revolution then stopped cranking. I cycled the key and hit it and no crank, just clunk. At this point I thought my flaky starter had finally bit the dust so I hit the key a couple more times and it began cranking and started back up. Of course I was killing skeeters big time and I finally shut it off.

When I shut it off I noticed it was barfing coolant out of the overflow tank and suddenly had a very sinking feeling. It had not ran long enough to get hot...

I pulled the plugs to do a compression test and as soon as I started cranking, testing #1, a few ounces of gase splurted over the l/h fender! I pulled the injectors and the injector for #6 was stuck open. As soon as this ocurred I knew what I was going to find but I kept going. After replacing the stuck injector I continued with the compression test. R/H bank was 125, 126, 128, and 135, that made me feel good. I moved to the left bank and had 132, 0, and there is where I quit because that was pretty much what I was expecting.

Apparently the injector filled up the cylinder and it hydro-locked and blew the head gasket between the cylinder and a cooling passage.

This thing is about a heartbeat away from either going to the boneyard or getting a SB Chevy dropped in it...

Disgustedly yours,

Justin B.

What a pisser! So close to being done.

I had my 380 SL back on the road less than a week, when the chain jumped a tooth and whacked all the valves on the left side.

I told my wife, complaining about having to pull the head, and her response was "Well, that's good isn't it? Isn't that what you like to do, work on cars?" So I thought about that for a minute, ordered the gaskets and got going on pulling the head.

At least it didn't leave you (or worse, your wife) stranded somewhere.

Well, things like this normally wouldn't hack me off this bad if I wasn't "financially challenged" at this time. :-\ Seems like everytime I put $1 in this beast it want's $2 more!

I pulled the intake this afternoon and don't see any gapeing holes in the block so far, so tomorrow I'll pull the head if I get time. Gotta go to the junkyard tomorrow and find Volvo and Z-car parts to sell so I can buy crap for "Hitler's Revenge" in the back yard!

At least Peter should be happy, now. He wanted me to change the intake gaskets anyway!

Will keep y'all updated...

Justin B.
