What's this 1982 240D got to be worth?
A guy about 2 blocks away from me just put his 1982 240D up for sale, the asking price is $3500. I didn't get the mileage, but the body is straight, and the paint is good, but I couldn't tell if it has been repainted. The interior had no rips or tears, and it has manual everything. The only bad thing is that has an Automatic transmission. I am thinking that the car might be worth $1500-$2000?

I do not know what the car is worth, but $3500 is what I paid earlier this year (in Dallas, TX) for my very clean, straight, no rust, 1982 240D manual transmission, with 192,000 miles on it. I may have paid too much, but it seemed like a good deal to me, or I would not have done it.

You need a pre-purchase inspection to figure out...
stuff that's not obvious that will have to be fixed to meet any state inspection, or just to get the car on the road. I bought a really nice stick 240 a year ago in Virginia for under $2k, but it required $1,500 worth of "safety" stuff before it could pass the one-time-only mandatory Maryland inspection. You need to factor in costs that will be immediate before you get to use the car before you know the car's "true" purchase price.

Pictures would help also.
Engine compartment, driver seat, dash, shift console, any rust areas and look under the car for floor pan rust.

Not to hijack this thread, but you bring up a good point to me. Everyone is seeking out manual 240Ds... I currently have a manual in what will be my everyday driver, and is now (2002 Saturn VUE), and am seeking a 240D in automatic form. Is there some reason that auto 240Ds should be avoided (besides the fact that you will lose a drag race with a snail on salt)?

Read through the posts on this board and compare the number of problems with autoboxes vs. the number of problems with manuals.

There are more automatic 240Ds around than manuals...
...since it seems a "package" for the US market included an automatic, power windows and roof, somewhat better interior trim levels (such as a center armrest between the front seats, possibly air conditioning, PB, PS, etc. It seems that most later 240's are so equipped. I also have a manual '81 in addition to an auto '83. The manual has crank windows, no sunroof, but has ac, power brakes and steering, etc.
IMHO, my automatic 240 performs as well or better than the manual...acceleration isn't neck-snapping, but it will cruise at 80 all day without effort, while the stick starts to exhibit "unhappiness" over 70. |

Jim B+ have you checked to see if the differentials are the same in those 240D's?
I doubt that an automatic would be happy if the same gear ratio in the rear end as that manual. The car with the manual tranny ought to run at 80 MPH without stain compared to the one with automatic. The ratios could be different. Look at the left lower corner of the gear case where its stamped into the casting. I believe the factory gears are 1:3.69

Remember the "55 MPH Speed Limit?" My '81...
manual tranny 240 has a speedo which tops out at 85 MPH, as did many cars built in '81 (later 240s have a more "normal" top speed noted). I think gear ratios, etc., were all set up to "encourage" adoption of 55 MPH.
...and "homey don't go lookin' on the gear casing for NOTHING"...not even the map to the Lost Dutchman Mine. |
