flywheel install 240D?

I have a couple of questions regarding the installation of the flywheel on a 240D. First, I what is the torque value for the bolts, can't find it in my manual. Second, is there any need for locktite on the bolts, or any thing special I should know about? Thanks!

I have been told that the flywheel that is in your car was balanced just for that motor and if changed it can throw it out of balance causing major headaches. I would just change the ring gear.

Maybe a search will turn up the torque specs. and the ring gear procedure.

Cheers,

Bill

I've got the set of shop manuals so I'll try to locate the specs for you when I get the chance. Working a lot of hours so please be patient.

Cheers,

Bill

I swapped a manual flywheel from one motor to another with no ill effects. Maybe I was just lucky. The flywheel debate has raged on and off for a long time on this board...no? I have a complete 4-speed set up and am looking for a good 300D to stuff it in one of these days. I'll let you know how it works out.

But back to your question. My manuals are at home so I don't know the exact spec., but make them tight...as tight as you can get them with a fair size ratchet. And yes, use locktight. Remember it's a shaky diesel...always use locktight.

dont try to do it without the proper proceedure. iirc they are stretch bolts so you torque to a certain value then turn it a specific amount of degrees. if not done correctly the results will be disasterous.

i am in ohio so i cant check for you.

by the way, on my 280e euro i found the flywheel was NOT neutrally balanced.

so you need to be careful with them.

if you have questions feel free to pm me.

I think the deal with ballancing the flywheel to crankshaft, pistons and rods is longevity issue. One of the reasons a factory shortblock can last 350k+ miles while you might get 180k out of a rebuild. And regarding torque specs, 50 lbs with one small drop of locktite should be fine.

Didn't do anything special with the flywheel on the engine in my truck...and that was five years ago.
