Silly odometer...
We took a road trip yesterday to Rochester. I filled up the tank and rest the trip meter. A few minutes later I noticed that the trip meter was at 0.9 and holding...and the odometer had stopped too. I pushed reset again and everything worked again for another 0.9 miles and then they would both stop (speedo worked fine). So I figured I'd look into it when I got back home. Well...today we drive again and everything works fine! I guess I lost about 300 miles on the odometer. But now I'm scared to reset the trip meter again.
Has anyone gone through this exercise from dieselgiant? http://dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm I think its probably the harder-to-fix problem that I have. Is it that tough to do? I'm so close to 300,000 and also the 500,000km mar too, I'd like to keep it working...and the trip meter isuseful too. If anyone's got any tips, I'd appreciated it! -Geoff

Not a difficult repair.

I agree, it is easy. Just follow the directions.
I've had my new gear in for 5,000 miles now.

Go for it. I agree as well, it's pretty easy. Just be carefull, lots of little parts to loose, but its easy. Although I couldn't get locktite on the gear, so I pulled the rod out and put a couple of chinks in the end the the gear fits on with chisel, and put the gear back on. Works great now!

It is easy and kinda fun, like taking apart a clock. You probly should treat it like an uninterupted one-time sit down operation so you dont get lost going back to assemble a pile of parts. And resist the temptation to grease or oil the gears, except for *maybe* a small dab of gun grease on the main nylon worm gear drive.
The only hazard that comes to mind is the oil pressure line. You need 2 wrenches to do it correctly or risk creating a leak in the guage. Same principle there as fragile oil cooler fittings in the engine bay. |

Must be a pretty common problem....
Pizzachef....how long have you owned your car?? When I first got this '85 300D it had a similar odometer problem.......the car has also sat for several years.....I found that when my odometer hung up, it was generally on any of the 9's....but I also found that it picked up again after I had been in reverse....so instead of tearing into the dash....I watched and waited.....and the odometer slip gradually disappeared.....has been since Thanksgiving since it has done the slip......so, in my car's case, just a little use brought it back to life.....

Only owned it about a month, first time I've noticed it. But it seemed to be related to the trip meter, thats why I was wondering if DG's odo fix would work. I've pulled the gauges already to replace the bulbs, and didn't push it all the way back in, so it'll be easy to get out again.
I agree it looks like a fun fix, bt I'll wait until I have a whole day to devote to chasing around the little pieces. I'd also like to install a tach (need to se if I have the necessary equipment on the balancer) and will probably wait to do both at the same time. Thanks, -Geoff

Shorebilly,
You are much better than I as I had one hung up on the 9, never could move it. Did the repair but only roughed the shaft, I could not bring myself to use LocTite, thought I would lock up the adjacent nnumber wheels. I did clean the numbers which aids with the dim instrument lites. P.S. I am originally from Weirton, What part do you hail......

I cheated and took mine in to be fixed and it works great now.
FWIW.....the guy told me to avoid resetting the trip WHILE THE CAR WAS ROLLING...do it when it is stopped....so far, so good.
