Can't turn engine over by Power Steering pulley

I just adjusted my valves a couple days ago and I encountered something weird on my 617 engine. I would crank from the Power Steering pulley and it'd go a few degrees clockwise and stop. I thought what the heck. Then I cranked the camshaft nut just a touch and it'd sort of click. I looked at the timing chain tensioner and it moved with the click. Then it was free at the Power Steering pulley for a few more degrees. then lock up again.

Doesn't seem right. Any ideas?

My idea is that folks should read other threads on the first page of the forum once every so often...........

Hey Brian,
I just read that. I do read before I post most days... But... the thing happening seems related to the timing chain and tensioner. Seems a little weird with the clicking sound. I just don't want something bad to happen if there is something wrong with chain, tensioner, etc.

Nick

Your symptoms are perfectly normal on an engine with good compression. I can't rotate the 617 with the camshaft or the power steering pulley.

Use the crankshaft bolt...........that's the only guaranteed method.

Why would anyone even bother to attempt to turn the engine over with the power steering pully anyways...?

In all of my years of mechanical work, I've only ever used the crank pully, and only ever seen other people use the crank pully.. Anything else and your belts are supposed to slip. If they don't, that means they are too tight to begin with, and they should be adjusted correctly...

I think some of us got that cheat from www.dieselgiant.com on his tutorials. He's seen a fair amount of the 61x engines and he does it. It worked very well on my last one. This one's the second 617 I've worked with but definitely does not work.

if you pull the GP's or injectors, you will have no compression to overcome...

There is a device available, sort of a pistol grip affair wired to two clips that attach to a couple of screws that allows one to pull trigger, engaging starter, release when cam is in position. Or, simply touch two screws together, somehow, same result.
