Passenger side mirrior replacement

The right hand mirror has been bugging me for years, with that “things are closer” crap so I finally changed to basic mirror glass. Took a while to get used to, a smaller picture but the correct distance let me maneuver better in traffic. The removal was straightforward. Turn the view down as far as it will go, this will open a small space at the top. Pry the mirror assembly out of the case at the outside top edge. It will pop off a mounting ball. Then slide the assembly out, away from the car. Leave the little drive piece in place on the drives if you can. Mine came out because I didn’t know what I was doing at the time.
Smash the old glass and lift out the pieces then scrape off the two-part tape residue.
Take the mirror retainer to you glass shop to be fitted with the new mirror. $25.00 .
The glass shop will mount the new glass for you with two-sided adhesive foam tape.
To reinstall slide the assembly into the plastic drive piece then snap onto the ball at the other end. Done.
The reflection at night will be a little brighter than you are used to but the mirror can be turned out a little

Did your W123 originally have a convex mirror? Mine both have flat mirrors. I also can't stand those silly convex mirrors. This is the correct flat glass for the right mirror:

I have been looking for a passenger side "objects are closer than they appear" glass. It pains me that you smashed that one.

Oh, and that huge font pains me a bit also. Wow......
Likewise. I believe there are quite a number of members here who are (still) on the hunt for the convex mirror lens.

Sorry as hell about the big font. It was a paste from word.
Why would you guys want that type of mirror that gives a false distance to an object.

I prefer the flat ones too, but some folks want a field of vision that includes the entire known universe. Just a matter of preference.

My 240D does not even have a right mirror. The only time I have actually wanted a right mirror is the one time I parallel parked on the left side of a one-way street.

Remember, a right mirror is not a replacement for taking the energy to actually move your body and look out the windows.

Why not take advantage of the great visibility the w123 has, a notch higher with the convex mirrors? I used to have the flat lens (I still have the original lens) but the convex one allows me to see in my right side blind spot much better than the flat one ever had. That's why I'm also on the lookout for the driverside convex mirrors (probably from RHD countries though, same idea opposite side only).

I do move my body when I turn, even if I have the convex mirrors. It doesn't really help much when parallel parking, because it can't tilt all the way down (unlike the newer cars) but it does help immensely just to determine if somebody or something is there or not, then I turn to judge the distance. At least that's how I do it.

Whatever works for you. My POS jeep has a convex mirror and I hate it. A properly adjusted flat mirror works just fine, and it is the correct part for the car.

I'm the same way, I like the convex mirrors for their field of view. I too would like a driver's side convex mirror.
My Euro model has a convex mirror without the stupid warning at the bottom.

I guess this all boils down to personal preference. My experience is going from the convex to a flat mirror isn't hard, but going from a flat mirror to a convex requires some getting used to. Some people get dizzy when they're not used to it and that's perfectly understandable. I noticed that when I still had the flat mirror I was constantly adjusting it since I could not get a good steady field of view (considering too that the w123's had quite some pitching when accelerating or braking, due to soft springs).

Mirror, mirror, on the right side...

My 85's right side mirror always points down too far. The electric motor only brings it part way back. I've tried "helping" it to tilt up further but it always ends up low again. Is there some adjustment inside the case?

Mine was acting the same as you discribe. After replacing the assembly I had more motion up/dpwn and a wider side motion. With the mirrion removed turn the two drives all the way in by hand.

Since I've been driving a w123 for all of two months now, I sometime wonder what the original vs. aftermarket equipment is on my ride.

My right-hand rearview mirror has glass that seems to be magnified. So rather than having "objects closer than they appear", objects are actually farther away. The glass doesn't appear to be convex or anything...just magnified a little.

Is this standard for an '82 TD?

Also, the right-side mirror doesn't move left or right, just up and down. Is this the normal design, or do I need some lube somewhere?
