I think the hans solo quote I have would apply to that civic... sure it doesn't look that good.. but it gets the job done.. I'm just a perfectionist

I believe him when he says 90 mpg. These guys rig up computers that you can see in one of the pictures that give instant mpg readouts, like many new cars.

I think he said 95mpg at 30mph. I wonder what my 240TD will get at 30mph since I don't have a mileage computer As to the mods he did, I say more power to him! If I had the same idea, I'd probably try to mold it all in fiberglass taking so long in the process that it would never get finished. I'm for anybody that can come to a useable end to a project. 85MPG at speed ain't too bad either.

Yeah I spend way to much time online!

A MB would be pointless to do that with, to heavy. A W123 with only a bucket for the seat would weigh more than that vintage of civic stock.

Fuel isn't that expensive, my idea of an eco friendly car is an S320 insted of an S500, or an E320 insted of the V8.

Now that I have actualy read that thread, I will say that its interesting. I would never do it, but its certainly interesting.

a few months back, I started a thread about hypermileing and linked to a website found on msn about it, I have never done any modifications to my cars, but I have often thought of adding a boattail to my astro van or suburban to improve the drag coefficient that barn door out back is just literaly SUCKING my fuel mpg's down.
I have gotten my suburban down around 25MPG by changing my driving styles and putting larger diamater tires on the car. I use the truck for work, so hideous mods would not be allowed... but it's fun to think about it.

Red face Here's an idea!

I read somewhere that some of these guys have used Coroplast as a kind of under-engine cover. The theory was, that the engine compartment was this large sail that trapped air or something like that and shielding the engine bay from the wind turbulence below would make for some good mileage gains.

This got me thinking about doing that. I mean, it would be non-intrusive, in that nobody would know unless they got really intimate with your car . With some strategic folds and bends to the coro-shield, one much-desired side-effect (for me at least) would be the consolidation of all the little drips of oil to ONE drip that could easily be controlled by one sheet of newspaper, instead of the many I have all over my garage floor

as long as the "shield" had somewhere for air to exit, this should work fine... it's possible that a total seal would be OK, since the radiator area could still vent out the wheelwells.
you could also put some behind the MB grille, to block air from entering the engine bay in the first place. the area around the grille would still let plenty of air pass over the radiator. you would have to make it adjustable, so it would still cool in the summer, and allow air to properly pass over the condenser for a/c...
a proper air dam below the bumper may help... it may also provide downforce, that may negate drag reduction... hmm.

I think a proper air dam would reduce drag by reducing turbulance under the car. Belly pans have long been a way to reduce drag too, but they make it tough to do any service down there.

I really admire what this fellow has done with the civic. The workmanship, though not meant to be show car slick is really excellent at the level of finish he has made it.

The time and effort is just astounding. I wouldn't be surprised if this car leads him to some kind of car designing work if he is not already doing that.

MB thought the same thing, thats why the next model after the W123, the W124 has belly pans. Even my W126 with its belly pans on is pretty smooth underneath. Everything from the drive shaft to the suspension is kind of tucked up into the car.

The new cars are pretty freaken streamlined underneath, they really spent some time in a wind tunnel. However I think the idea is to lower noise levels, and to suck the car down to the autobahn at 150+ mph. MB claims that they improve engine cooling as well.

Might help keep the rabbits out too. I left a car parked for several months while we were out of town and when I came back there was a bunny under the hood. Bunny ate my spark plug wires. BTW, they ain't cheap no mo'. Dogs killed the rabbit. No, not a VW rabbit.

Anyone know where to get thin aluminum... like aircraft skin?? I'd be psyched to try this out on my silver wagon!! I think it would look awesome to make a big boat tail on the back and a fairing/air dam on the front.. wheel fairings, trim the body of excess aerodynamic imperfections such as mirrors, trim, roof rails.. etc... absolutely awesome.. I'm envisioning a great big silver bullet... With my 2.47 rear I bet I could set some record mach numbers too.... hmm..

And use the roof rack and rails as diffusers
