Assembly Lube Question

Getting ready to install a fresh head on my 603. I'm happy with putting assembly lube on the cam lobes and journals, but what about the outside of the lifters? The valves?

The engine won't be run for a while, no car for it yet, should I put something on the cylinder walls also (other than engine oil)?

Also, any favorite brands of assembly lube?

I have used Engine Assembly Lube # 105 for diesels especially Cats, which had a higher compression ratio than the older DDADs.

At one time, GM used Crisco, believe it or not

Lubro Moly

'Kinda hard to find sometimes.

Not for Rings,Pistons or Cylinder Walls though.
(Spray them down with Marvel Mystery Oil as you "Button it Up"???)

I used Red Line assembly lube as I put my m117 back together, but I don't really have enough experience with different lubes or even with tasks that use it to have a preference on it.

It seemed to work, and the engine runs, for what ever that's worth!

I just used the stuff Advance Auto sells.
It's not rocket science, just need something for the few seconds it takes for the oil to start flowing.

Thanks, I keep the MoS2 paste around, all I've ever used, but I didn't know if there was some new and better one that you guys like.

I think it pre-dates LiquiMoly but is pretty much the same, except it is kaolin (clay) based, not paraffin, so it doesn't turn into runny snot after getting warm or sitting for a while.

Still looking for a home for that 603 huh? Its a 3.5 liter motor right? That'd be sweet to put into a 300SD.....make it a 350SD with lots more power!

I don't know if you know

There is an oil reservoir called 'accusump' that will prepressurize the engine before start up. It's originally meant for racing engines as a last resort save your butt type thing but it can be easily adapted.

I had an Accusump on my TR6. Seemed like a good idea, probably overkill though on a Brit car. It was marketed (in the '70s/'80s) for reducing startup wear.

Not a 3.5 Paul. I was going to do a 3.5L, but then noticing that it has about 25hp less than the 3.0 and a less robust reputation, I decided to do the 3.0 with 6mm elements in a 3.5L IP, the 55-trim turbo, and a 22 head.

I might take it down to have it dynoed when it's finished, but finished means coming up with an aftercooler which is really the most complicated and expensive part of a 603 upgrade (assuming it has to fit back in a car). It might be a while.

I have started thinking about making a '94/'95 "E 300 CD" with the engine. I have seen quite a few 300CEs go on ebay, not too expensive. The '94/'95 would be best, especially if I can find a black one without ASR. Otherwise you've met Bruno, the black '94, ... just hate to mess with a car that runs that well and a complete service history. Plus it's ASR which means additional complexity integrating the cruise and eliminating the electronic throttle.

I can tell you are aching to have a diesel again....

That sounds like a sweet motor!! If I find a good source of income.....and then a car that needs a motor.....

The 300E has been behaving, so its in my good graces right now. I figured out (finally) that our "13 mpg" is not 13mpg....its a badly slipping trip odometer....tonight I drove it 9 miles and it counted....2ish... Regular odometer works fine. The car is infact getting about 21-22 mpg...

I have used Red Line Assembly Lube as well, but mostly for items that are not lubricated by the pressurized oil system of the engine. For those areas I typically dip/douse everything in Delvac 1 as I assemble it. Jim

More than you know.

I spent about 3hours changing the belt on one of the M104s today, the 602 and 603 were good for about 1/2 hour.

If this car didn't have ASR I'd probably have an M104 for sale by the end of the month. Instead, I'm considering just selling the car and hunting for another good 124 diesel.

I swore off Mercedes gassers after my first one, forgot why over the past 12years, now I remember.

mbgassers are harder to work on and require more patience and special tools but they are still high qauilty mercedes compared to other gas cars.

Working on 190E 2.6 isnt bad once you have the right tools.

I am beginning to fully understand this as well.....I do know I probably won't get another gasser MB....unless I have oodles of money available to throw at it.
