getting my ac working again?

well im about to go out of town til monday night and im taking the diesel as usual, i am planning on recharging the ac when i get back with some r12, however i dont even know if the system is even in proper working order...

does the ac compressor only kick in when there is freon in the lines? and my climate control switches are goofy so i dunno if it will work with the switches the way they are.. i cant seem to get the center 2 vents to blow air out either

and does the aux fan only turn on when the ac compressor kicks in? because my aux fan has never gone on before.

i have an evacuator pump to evacuate the system and also see if it holds a decent pressure so i can tell if there are leaks in the system

From what I understand there has to be pressure in the lines for the accumulator switch to kick on. If you have a leak, it won't come on at all.

TurboSDL,
I am going to be honest with you..... you have more AC tools than you have basic AC knowledge... but you are asking specifics about your car instead of trying to learn the basic AC concepts... which can cost you a LOT of money and can even be dangerous to your health....
There is a large amount of information in the archives.. use my name to search perhaps...
and check out aircondition.com and ackits.com....
they have forums with lots of good info...and also FAQ pages that are great...

AC is a pain in the you know what to do correctly... the physics does not bend for anyone...and can bite you quickly if you do not understand what is going on.

i kno a decent amount about ac and charging ac.
the class i had on climate control at school was only 3 weeks and it isnt enough for what needed to be covered in my opinion. I just never charged an R12 sys so i was wondering if any of the rules are different.

btw what switch on the climate control turns the ac on? should i just move the dial to cold as it will go and hit automatic? there is no freon in the system i pushed the valve with a small screwdriver to see and there was just a little hiss that came out so i kno it needs a recharge so i was gona put on the evacator and when i take it off monitor the vacuum and make sure it stays in neg pressure.

What Leathermang is trying to tell you is adding refrigerant isn't going to permanently fix your AC.
You need to fix the leak, wherever it is. Then flush the system. THEN you can add refrigerant & the proper amount of oil.

Did they teach you in class that when refrigerant leaks the oil leaks out with it?

Thumbs up

Sounds like you're in for a full rebuild on your car. I'd take it ALL apart, flush it clean, Nylog orings, probably a new PBU since you said yours works goofy, etc, etc, etc.

And yes, when working properly, the system only works when pressure is in the system.
