timing chain & IP debacle
As some may remember, 1981 240d I was rolling on a new chain, vise grip popped off lost chain into abyss, recovered chain, got that all straight pulled IP reset it to 24 degrees BTDC bleed everything but won't start. Any ideas.

I think you need to tell us more about exactly what you did... in detail ...
Have you checked the relationship of the number one intake valve to the crank position? Have you then checked the start of fuel delivery using the drip method ? Is it turning over fine but just won't start ? After feeling that you got the chain installed correctly.... did you turn the engine OVER by HAND ( socket on crank nut ) for TWO TURNS of the crank to make sure you do not have any valves hitting pistons ?

Recheck the Camshaft Timing Mark with the one on the Camshaft Bearing Tower.
When you look at your Crankshaft Timing Marks it should be at Zero Degrees= Top Dead Center. The Teeth on the Drive Gear of the Fuel Injection Pump are so fine that it is easy to stick the IP back in a tooth or 2 off. The above would show up as being right or wrong if you Drip Timed the Fuel Injection Pump.

Ok here's what did:
Fished the chain out, motor would not turn over by hand so i took off cam tower put chain on sprocket lined up tdc on sprocket, tower and balancer. Turned motor over several times. Did a valve adjustment. Started motor it started right up but was smoking and jumping. Figured it was not timed with IP. Took off IP made sure marks on IP lined up and then set motor at 24 degrees BTDC. Put Ip back on and bled lines. Tightened lines and started cranking. Nothing. Charged battery cranked again would reve up and die. Threw hands up and went to bed. I am waiting on a drip tool that I ordered. I did mark th ip before removed it so I think I am relativey in the same position. |

Tell us more about this.
How high does it rev? Way past idle ? Is your shut off valve wired open ? Does it rev up and round over and move right back to dieing ? How long does it run total when it does start ? Ok.. so in setting the cam position... you did not check it by using the movement of the number one intake valve of the number one cylinder ? You used the Cam mark... which is described in the FSM as only for setting the engine when it is being built ? And without the drip tube in your possession you have not set the timing with reference to the movement of the number one valve.... So basically you are not sure ( since you were not using FSM procedure) that your fuel is being inserted at some trustworthy relationship to the crank or the cam lobes (?)..... I think you need to back up to as basic as you are able...and see that all things are to specs coming up from there...

Because when the Timing Chain Tensioner tighten up the Chain there may be a change the degree reading.
