'85 CA 617 intake details needed
hi all, can anyone supply a photo of a stock cali 617.952 engine bay? my mechanic suggested i get a K&N filter since the big black cylindical box i brought in, supposedly from a matching engine, won't fit next to the turbo intake. either i got the wrong part (sight unseen) or there is an intake hose i am still missing. generally this guy knows what he's talking about but i'm not clear on whether to continue pursuing the stock setup, or whether the canister i got was correct.
let me be clear, i'm not concerned with debating whether K&N makes good filters, rather finding one that easily fits my swap (617.952 into 1977 123.123 240D). what is the diameter of the turbo air intake neck? |

I'm temporarily using a gauze/oil filter on my conversion. The coupler I'm using is this one from Spectre Performance.
Here's the current setup. As you can see, I'm pretty tight on space too. I'm in the process of replacing the gauze/oil filter setup with a paper filter, but it's not installed as of yet. Here's a link to the design Air Cleaner And just in case things get out of hand, I've still got some of this stuff left from my thread that you're welcome to use. Here's an image of a Kali engine compartment

Is the intake manifold and exhaust manifold from a Federal or a Cali engine? this will make a difference. if you look at the picture of the Cali engine, the intake manifold sits up higher and has a different configured exhaust manifold to give the Trap Oxidizer room which sits under them.
You will need the Cali manifolds so the in take hose from the air cleaner will line up with the turbo. If you are using the Federal manifolds, they sit lower, and as I remember, the pipe that comes out of the Cali air filter bucket is about the same level as the top of the turbo intake. you might be able to cut the pipe to shorten it so a hose will line up. Do you have the air filter bucket like shown in the picture? Why not just get an air filter housing that sits up on top of the engine? Now if you are using the Cali engine, the upper oil pan doesn`t have the pipe connection for the oil drain from the filter. Are you using a 85 Cali engine or a Federal engine? The stock 85 filters are available, but around $50. Don`t know if there is a K&N style made for the Cali. Charlie

thank you guys, that's very helpful. the manifolds match the engine, all cali. the air filter housing i already picked up looks like the one in the bay pic, so maybe my guy has just forgotten how the 85 is meant to be hooked up. i am going to picknpull tomorrow (two 85s in newark, hopefully not 126s) and i will look for the hose which apparently connects the filter housing to the turbo.
still have the 240d pancake type housing as well but i assume the bucket type would perform better. mach4, your setup is nice and simple. i love the debate repellent too, it's very effective! |

If push comes to shove I've got the setup from my donor I could sell. It's not going to the crusher for another few weeks. PM me if you need it.

Is the donor car a rustbucket or is it a local rust free car? It might be worth offering it to someone in the rust belt for the scrap price. If I was going to scrap a car, I would remove EVERY usable part and sell them on CL or ebay. I have sent 3 carcasses to the scrapper, and nothing was left that was usable. One was wrecked on the front and rear, so it was definitely not usable.

Definitely rust free, but very rough looking. Some dinged panels, but most are straight. Interior is pretty much toast.

Either way, I bet someone back east would love to have it to replace the body on their rustbucket. I have learned MY lesson, I won't send a complete rust free body to the scrap yard again. Also, the air cleaner is worth saving even if the rest goes for scrap. Some people use them for their engine swaps in other vehicles that don't have hood clearance (even with Federal turbo)....Rich
