Was chapter 27 in the FSM ever translated?

G'day Folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to the question

"Was chapter 27 - the automatic transmission chapter - in the FSM ever translated from the original language version (German) into English for any of the following models R/C 107, W108, W109, W110, W111, W114, W115, W116, W123, W124, W126, W201"?

I've added a poll to help this thing along. Polls are fun!

Thanks go out to the folks who have voted so far and to the folks who have sent me PMs about this.

I think before this goes any further I need to come clean!

I have a copy of the German W123 FSM and in that copy there is a great description of how these hydro-mechanical-(mostly vacuum controlled) transmissions work => or more importantly are meant to work. The only problem is that it is in German.

My German language skills are kind of limited to car part names - but I do speak Dutch so I can kind of get along with it if I scratch my head and use an online translator tool...

...it probably wouldn't be a very accurate translation but it would at least provide a functional description of these transmissions in English. I'd like to see something like this on the internet so that everyone who struggles with these transmissions has something as a basic reference.

My hope is that once people understand what these bizarre things are meant to be doing then the whole fault finding process becomes a bit more managable.

However, the thing is - if I can find a copy of a pre-translated version then a lot of effort and work is saved.

Here's the contents of the functional description...

...that I'd like to find / to be translated into English

I've also got a copy of a Dutch article (in Dutch so not much use to most people here doh!) describing the functional workings of the "new" 722.0 and 722.1 transmissions that can be used to bolster the earlier 722.XXX transmission data...

But as you can see it is a lot of work for one lonesome English chap to translate by himself! My intention is to summarise summarise and summarise the information as much as possible to make it a bit more readable - it is just this process will be a lot easier and quicker (and probably more accurate) if I start out with an English version.

My understanding is that technical information is translated for every country to provide information for the dealers, as they have to service the cars. I know for instance that there is a Dutch version of the FSM, but it was never available to the public.

Maybe MB USA made some kind of deal (with ATSG for instance) to limit the information about transmissions, you can imagine it can have some commercial gain.

Most dealerships don't do complicated stuff such as IP adjustments or transmission overhauls. They use specialised companies, so the need for information about the transmission for the dealer was also limited.

The English language version of sections 27 & 27.3 appears in the Body and Chassis manual (2 volumes) for Series 114/115 cars. Published by MBNA with a publication date of 1979. 722.1 & 722.2 are covered.

I will recount a story from many years ago, on another Mercedes discussion list. The originator was I believe Stu Ritter, who some of you will remember went on to form another forum with Richard Easley. Stu was a Mercedes factory trained mechanic who worked in the dealer system before he opened his own shop.

Anyway, the tale went like this. Many years ago, it became federal law in the US that all auto manufacturers had to make their factory service manuals available for sale to the public. Prior to that many, including Daimler Benz, had refused to do so.

The story went that even once the law was in place, Mercedes made it as difficult as possible to obtain the manuals: dealers in the US and Canada would plead ignorance on how to order them, or would outright refuse.

Eventually someone who knew how to, complained, I assume to the FTC, and DB was hauled up in court, at which time they relented -- except for the transmission manuals. For whatever reason, they stubbornly refused to make those available and have continued to do so.

That's the story more or less as it was related back then, giving allowances for my less than perfect memory.

Thanks Frank - I'll see if I can get hold of a W114 / W115 manual then

Good point.

Perhaps we're too adventurous here?

I used to do this kind of translation for a living, French and German. Going to English is for me, a lot easier and faster than the other way, can you send me a copy somehow?

Just don't expect it by Friday, after all, the price is right.

Thanks for the offer I'll send you a PM - this is a very kind offer but I'm not sure if you realise what you're getting into!
